Hello,

I'm currently trying to write some kind of birth plan and am try to decide if I'd like to deliver the placenta naturally or with the aid of the injection. I think I am swinging towards the natural method but, I don't want to be waiting for a long period of time. For those mothers who chose to deliver it naturally, how long did you have to wait?

I'm also aware that the blood loss can be larger after but then slows dow a lot quicker than the injection after that. Are there any other benefits I seem to be missing out on? I'm assuming if you need to be stiched, you'd have to wait for the placenta to be delivered before this can happen?

And finally, can anyone fill me in on the benefits of leaving the cord pulsate after delivery, I don't know much about this at all.

Thanks,
Alex xxx

I opted for the natural delivery of the placenta. I did require a fair bit of stiching but that was fine to wait a bit. Delivered it after about 15 minutes of skin on skin with Galen. I tried pushing lying down but nothing happened so I stood up then squatted down and gave it one big push and out it all came. Very easy :)

With regard to the umbilical cord, iirc its because it still is doing work until it stops pulsing to LO is still getting benefits from it. Not sure about other ladies who waited also but Galen's cord then dropped off 3 days after he was born and it was very clean.

I'm personally glad I opted for both the above as it made for the more natural birth experience that I had wanted and hoped for.

Of course in some situations they can't leave the umbilical cord and have to clamp and cut but if it can be left to stop pulsing before clamping and cutting why not I reckon :)

With all mine i had natural delivery of the placenta :)

You could always say try it naturally and then change your mind. If say you've been waiting 30 min and your fed up then they can give it then. There is no time limit for it to be given. I'm planning on letting it come out by itself but if i get fed up waiting then i can ask for the injection.

r.e. blood loss, with the natural way you get heavier blood loss in the first few days than otherwise but then it really slows down - more than if you had the injection. Basically it's the same amount of blood either way - it's just whether you get a lot over the first few days of a steady flow over a longer time.

I had the injection... at the time I didn't really think about it or care to be honest, I just wanted to relax and be able to enjoy things :)

I had the injection but didn't even realise until after! According to my notes my third stage was 6 minutes...

all I noticed was something flopping out of me!!! :rotfl:

I had wanted to do it naturally but I was at home and the midwives were concerned about my blood loss so I was given the choice of injection or hospital! I chose injection.

I did wait until the cord had stopped pulsating and like Sherlock we found that his stump fell off on day 3 and he never had any problems with it.

I was the same with mine! Afetr hours of labour, the last thing I wanted was to wait even longer to deliver the placenta!

With tia I had an injection, several bags of syntoxin, and a midwife pulling on the cord...which subsequently snapped off leaving the placenta very firmly in place...

with Serena I didn't have it and it plopped out on its own after a couple of pushes :) which DH kindly took photos of... :x :x :x

Ditto

And i dont remember having to push the placenta out, i remember feeling the midwives tugging on the cord after my OH had cut it, i did have the injection to deliver the placenta!!

I had heavy blood loss for about 4/5days and then it was like a light period for 2 weeks!!

i wanted to leave it natural but i didnt bother with a birth plan (all i'd done was told my boyf not to let me wuss out and go to hospital!)

just as i was pushing one of the MWs said to me "now youve agreed to the injection for the placenta" and i remember thinking "eh?" but i was in no state to start havin a conversation lol!

and after melissa was born they asked about the vitamin k one coz apparently i hadnt given permission for that one. i was so exhausted i still was in no state to make decisions so i let my boyf decide that one (he said yes give her it)

when i thought about it later i did vaguely remember a MW askin me about the placenta injection while a contraction was just coming on and thinking "what u doing tryna talk to me woman!" so i just snapped "yeah whatever!" then she asked me about the vitamin k one by the time she'd finished that sentence the contraction was peaking and i was just incapable of speaking at all (also its like ur surroundings all disappear for a moment innit its so strange!) so i hadnt answered that one.

i mightve been a bit annoyed as the placenta one i was asked when i couldnt make decisions for myself, but i dont mind i was glad i had it in the end. it was out within minutes so i could lie on the bed with my boyf and our new baby; also there is still some dull pain until that comes out so its a relief to get it out i wouldnt like to hang around in discomfort for another half an hour or whatever!
