I know you are not meant to use second hand mattress, does the same apply if it's a siblings mattress. My lil one is almost 4 months old and has outgrown her Moses basket. I want to move her to the cot, which has been used by her sister, who is now 2 yrs old. Would it be wise to buy a new mattress or would existing one be ok?

I bought a new mattress for crib and I'll buy one for cotbed too.

Although Bee co-sleeps... and that mattress isn't new so feel free to ignore me lol

X

I'm not changing cot matress, it was bought just over a year ago and ds hasn't weed, pooed or sicked on it. I am getting a new Moses basket and mattress as it was stored in the attic and is probs a bit manky.

Don't quote me as it was only what I was told once. But the need for a new mattress for each child is due to the ways in which the mattress moulds to the child's sleep position so can increase the risk of cot death. As I said I don't know this is the right answer but I do see the logic behind it. That said surely that only applies if a baby sleeps on their front ?? My mattress was from toys r us and cost me £40 I could justify spending more than that however would have changed it if my Lo was uncomfortable. We r going to a bed tonight ... Wish me luck lol x

I used my nieces matress for bed nest and for crib which were both passed down from my sister. Mattresses were over £100 each and both had only been used for 6mt. My boy is nearly 5mt and will be going into cot soon (matress was bought new). I'll chuck these mattresses now and get new if I have another but will re use cot matress for another baby if it's in good condition.
Babies used to sleep in drawers and share with siblings on saggy mattresses and were fine (majority)! I decided to not be too obsessed over the SIDS stuff or I would never sleep! X
