Hi Ladies

I officially join you in tri three on Monday, but thought I'd sneak in to ask a quick question.

I read in the 'rough guide to pregnancy' that cot bumpers are not safe for new born babies. I think it was due to risk of suffocation - I guess from untying and falling onto babe? Has anyone else heard the same? I was planning for my Mum to make us a cot bumper to match the rest of the stuff that she is making for the nursery, but am worried now. Is it OK to have the cot with no bumper....confused.com!:wall2:

I havee the bumper but baby will be in a moses basket the first few weeks xx

I'm using the bumpers with my 10 week old, have been since she was 6 weeks. She kept wiggling and bumping her head on the bars. I have the tommee tippee monitor under the mattress so I'm confident she won't hurt herself. I have triple knotted the strings!

Hi, yeah it's generally not recommended for young babies and if the baby is put at the bottom of the cot then it shouldn't really move up that far when it's so young.

It won't be long before you will need one though so your mum should still make one. What a nice idea!

I have heard this as well, and also the fact when u have a bumper on it then u cant see the baby if shes up that end, to see if shes been sick etc.
So I wont b using a bumper bcause of that reason, until she's a few months old anyway

yeah I have a cot bumper and Ellie doesnt move that far up the cot as we place her near the bottom, we have tied it on very securly xx

They aren't recommended, but Toby was always sticking his arms through the bars and getting stuck with his face up against them so we got these Breathable Cot Bumpers and they've been great - they're not as soft but they're breathable and he'll sleep up against them without bumping into the bars and waking himself up, or ending up with body parts sticking through

i have attached my bumper onto my cot already and as i am using a moses basket figured that by the time she is in her cot it will be ok to use it. and anyway when newborn i thought they would be more likely to wriggle down rather than up towards the bumper? and my house is ******* freezing according to nursery thermometer thing its cool so figured i wouldnt have much of a problem with over heating.

Just out of interest, when they start being able to move more ie turning over, wouldnt that be more dangerous with a bumper if they rolled into it then couldnt roll away again?? or is it me? lol. the cool thing with my bumper ( as with most i guess) is that it doesnt come down very far ie the cot is like 3 or 4 foot long and the bumper only covers like 1 foot at the top of the cot so not like it goes all the way round or anything allowing plenty of airflow x

Lexi I think that we all worry about these things lol. We still have the cot at the highest setting and that means that the bumper touches the matress still also as the matress moves down i will move the bumper down cause like you said its great for keeping the draft from there head xx
