Carol Thatcher a racist?

Sweetcheeks24 said:
Oh yeah and the original point of the post asking if Carol should have been sacked; yes (see my opinion on the word being used to describe a black person above)

Apparantly it was Andy Murray she was referring to having hair like a golliwog  He's not Black.... he's scottish though!

For goodness sake. in this day and age is there even any need for the word golliwog, at all? No. There's no point defending it

But golliwog IS the name of a doll. I'm not defending it's use as a name for a black person cos I don't think it should be used in that way nor would I ever use it that way but I don't understand why the doll or it's name is racist.. unless used to describe a black person

Oh I know. But look at when it was most popular- back when people weren't too bothered about what they called something.
And now, yes, it may have been the name of something, but it has connotations, it offends quite a lot of people, so why use it? It's not necessary IYKWIM

I do see your point :)

So am I racist cos I like the dolls  I think that's what is confusing me the most  (I'm confident I am not racist by the way, just wondering if other people would see me as racist because I like the doll)

I shouldn't think so. I wouldn't see you as racist if you think they are cute or w/e. If you were going round saying "Omg look at my gollywog, isn't it so cute,so realistic too!" I'd be like "here...mate... that's a bit racist"

It may not be very PC to like the dolls, I'm not sure, but I mean, you're not exactly tying them to upside down crosses whilst wearing a white hood or anything...

In February 2009, Carol Thatcher, in an off-air conversation at the BBC, reffered to a tennis player at the Australian Open as "the one who was defeated by the gollywog in the previous tour" (apparently reminding her of the golliwog motif seen on jars of jam in her childhood). The comment was considered by the BBC as "wholly unacceptable" and Thatcher was informed that unless she apologised she would no longer be a reporter on BBC's The One Show. Thatcher stated that it was a silly joke and declined to make an "unconditional apology". It has since transpired that it was the métis French top player Jo-Wilfried Tsonga who was the subject of Carol Thatcher's name calling as a gollywog.

What do you expect from a family that were exceedingly happy to rake in millions via benefiting from the apartheid regime in South Africa, who did all they can to stop any action being taken against that apartheid regime in South Africa, and whose stupid son tried to make himself King of certain black people by backing a coup so that he could take over the country?!!

she should have been fired.

As I originally pointed out in my comment, I refferred to caravan site as a British way of saying trailor park - its a term commonly used in America. I in no way referred or intended to refer to gypsies or travellers.

Sorry lol not meaning to pick but its still the same! Not all people on an American trailer park are of low intelligence! They also use that term in an offensive way! If I was an American who lived on a trailer park, i would be very offended by that remark!

I never said all people that live on an American trailer park are of low intelligence, go back and read my comments Lea m. I referred to the intelligence of a trailer park not each individual that has lived on or will live on a trailer park. Lets not take things way out of context here. I was simply offering my take on the pain my father went through when he first came to this country and was in my opinion trying to bite my tongue when talking about the animals that regularly beat the crap out of him as having the intelligence of a trailer park because he was Asian and at the same time repeatedly called him a Paki. Now please don't come back to me and say that I have offended animals by comparing them to the scum that beat my father up!

Don't take my comment out of context any more than it needs to be. Racism is wrong wrong wrong and unless you have been on the receieving end of it you will never truely feel the pain.

Im not saying that racism is anything but wrong!!??
Im simply stating that people say things that can cause offense without even realising or meaning to what so ever! As like I said, if I was American and from a trailer park, I would be offended by your comments that these animals that abused your father have the same intelligence as me![/quote:yarocqt1]

Well its just aswell that you aren't American and from a trailer park then because according to your statement you therefore aren't offended either!!!!!

one thing sticks out to me so much - how sad is it we actually have to have this debate at all :(

benjamin was watcing a programme earlier, cant remember the name but it was a little black child and his friend was white. i asked benjamin what made the two boys look different.

he said that one had a white teeshirt on and one had a blue tshirt on.

how incredibly sad that in just a few short years, because of the fact that people still have this issue with race, that he will think the difference is the colour of their skin.

Now why would I want to PM you to clear things up? This is a forum and this subject is off topic, I'm here to put across MY opinion and MY experiences on a subject and am simply doing that not splitting hairs as you put it.

I really enjoy a healthy debate, and whether I reply to your posts or not is a decision I can and will make for myself!

I've had a lot of racist comments for being english too by scots who obviously could tell i was better than them :) How embarrassed my husband is for his race!

i really hope that was a joke :|

Indeed. What a generalisation if it wasn't.

HollyHobby, any chance you could clarify what you meant here? I'm quite concerned by your comment if it was meant seriously.

Valentine

Yes I am being serious. Have met quite a few and lived amongst racist small minded Scots and the fact is I am more Scottish than English but to them you are either one or the other!
Just like you are either Rangers or celtic, catholic or protestant.
Wouldnt live in Scotland again if you paid me, sorry but that's the truth, hubby gets a much better reception and welcome in England.
Found the scots where I lived to be bigotted racist idiots, and thats pretty much against anyone who was different to them and we'd have to listen the Orange Lodge Marches every now and then who would get police escorts for their own safety!

The better than them remark was tongue in cheek, but hey if people are nasty to you because of where you come from then they are the ones with the inferiority complex.

So its not just black and white that is the problem here, it's if you are the slightest bit different and it will probably never change.

Gosh, sorry you had such a bad experiance. Whereabouts did you stay?

I've lived up here for 7 years, DH is scottish and my daughter is too. Only had a couple of incidents in that time, where i strongly beleive that they would have insulted me whatever part of the uk i'm from.

I live just outside edinburgh in an ex mining village, that has been subject to hard times and on its way up. So not the most cosmopolitan of places.

I had a discussion with friends god, over a year ago now...on one of our 'poor man's sex in the city evenings' drinking cocktails in Leith!! lol

I'm English, One friend is Black, another Gay and the forth mate is an islander...

Guess who gets the most ripping?

The Island girl for her ginger hair!! I found Scottish folk the most hospitable, welcoming people. In my experiance more so than the English. When we attended my sister's wedding DH got so much abuse from yobs going by in their cars etc...scottish ****, etc..

Luckily he handled it pure scottish style by giving them an eyeful of a nice scottish beef and veggies!

Sorry I wasn't on last night, the forum was playing up so much and I saw posts were missing so thought I'd just come back on today :) Glad its all better now :)

Theres been some great replies since I was last on

Hollyhobby, I don't think having a bad experience warrants slagging off a whole group of people. How can you say you are better than them because a 'few' have upset you? Thats daft.

Edit - We spent New year 2008 in Scotland and for the record we found everyone we met lovely and very hospitable :D

I still think that's a huge generalisation based on your own unfortunate experience. It says little about the country I'm afraid and more about the small-minded people you were associating with at the time.

The town in which I live is actually predominantly English people and Western European immigrants - the Scottish people are in the minority! Here, people don't hear the accent, they get to know the person behind it first.
