At my ante natal the midwife said our babies born in Nov/Dec will all need to be brought home in a snowsuit . We have a 0-3 snowsuit (the big massive thick ones like a padded coat) but I was lead to believe you can't strap baby into a car seat wearing one? Anyway my debate was we will only be walking from hospital to car right outside and then straight into our house. Can I not just dress her in a fleecy sleep suit with a jacket over the top and then blanket? I'll bring both but the snowsuit looks huge and will swamp her and I don't want to buy a newborn one :/

Could you not buy a thinner snowsuit? We have one that's fairly thick so I'm getting a thinner 'pramsuit' as well, for days when it's not cold enough for the super thick one. Mothercare have some lovely thinner ones around £12-14!

Umm, that's really just unnecessary. A snowsuit I mean, since you're not supposed to put baby in a car seat with a snowsuit on anyway. I'd go with a fleecy suit (or even better, a thin wool suit) with a blanket on top. And a warm hat. I live in Norway, it gets cold here, so this is a daily issue. We don't even HAVE a snowsuit, that's considered more for when baby is a bit older usually.

You can also get special car seat covers. Like:

And warm sleeping bags for prams too. A lot easier than faffing around with dressing and undressing a newborn baby, definitely!

Normal vest and sleepsuit with mittens, booties and a hat will plenty for going in the car seat, you can put loads of thick blankets on top for the short trip outside.

Was the MW who told you this also in the snowsuit business? Lol

I've had a November baby and a January baby and both came home in long sleeve vest, baby grow, Cardigan, hat, mittens and a blanket - layered if it was super cold (which it was with my November baby). We went from hospital to car and car to home so were outside for all of 10 seconds.

X

I wouldn't bother with snowsuit either...would definitely not be happy strapping them in a carseat while wearing one.

Cardigan/jacket with a few blankets would be fine as long as car was nice and toasty too. x

We have a January baby and used a snow suit and carseat cosie but I live in Scotland and our winters are super cold.

We were told must have was appropriate clothing ie no shorts in winter and a carseat?

We were out for a minute tops and once in the car i took off the carseat cosie toes.

Here he is fitting snug at a few weeks but his snowsuit did fit him well, it may not fit in if its too big as belts have to be secure and snug.

I would say a thin snow suit and jacket with a blanket is enough? Maybe check with the labour wards? You could no doubt get through to a desk on the ward and ask what the requirements are as each hospital is different.

Depending on babg size you may need a smaller snow suit anyway? Jackson was in newborn for at least a month his 0-3 drowned him and he was quite long and 7.03.. I had a bigger one as we used snow suits for a few months  it snows through March and some times April here! Oh and our car lift had no heating atall.

Good luck, such a magical time.

Snowsuits I've got are for pram walks only
I'll just have him dressed in a sleepsuit. Hat and mits. Tucked in with loads of blankets for snugness x

Think a snowsuit is Unnecessary too. To be honest I haven't even bought one yet. I'll just be bringing baby home in vest, leggings, cardy and blankets, obviously hat, mits and socks too :)

This picture demonstrates why you should not use a snowsuit or thick padded coat in a car seat. Blankets on top should be sufficient, and if you've got a slightly longer car journey you don't want to overheat baby. Would you want to wear your coat on a longer journey with the heaters etc on? Maybe you should all send your OHs out to the car 10 mins early to start it up and warm it up!!

Snow suits are brilliant for in the pram, and certain types are also really good when babywearing on extra cold days, but definitely avoid in the car for the safety aspect x

Definitely not doing this. Our baby will be in vest, sleepsuit, cardi, scratch mitts and hat. Blankets on top. We also have a foot muff for the car seat, which is fleecy like a snowsuit but safe for in the car. We'll be using this but only because we've fitted it into the car seat already and can't be bothered taking it off! She's talking shite... X

The picture I posted demonstrastes a baby in a snow suit in a car that was secure and safe, so it really does depend on your carseat, snow suit and weather. I certainly wasnt having Jackson in a sleepsuit and mittens in minus weather

Jackson did not over heat, wasnt drowned in fabric and still lived to tell the tale despite wearing the snow suit for a month of his life in and out of the car. Seat belts should always be readjusted depending on what baby is wearing so whoever did that to their child doesnt have a clue that they have readjustable straps.

I really wouldnt chose whats right for bub from a googled photo, go with what you think is right :) there is no set laws and as long as blanets hats etc are removed once baby is inside there really is no issue.

Yes youre right op, you shouldnt have a snow suit in car seat. I had my eldest when it was snowing and brought her home in.vest, sleepsuit, cardigan, hat, mittens and blankets.

I found a good guide online regarding snowsuits and coats:

Take the car seat into the house.
Put the winter coat or snowsuit on the child.
Put the child in the car seat and buckle the harnesses as you normally would before car travel. Adjust the straps to the appropriate fit for your child.
Take the child out of the car seat without loosening the straps at all.
Take the coat off your child.
Put the child back in the car seat and buckle the harnesses again, but do not tighten the straps.
If you can fit more than two fingers under the harness at the child's shoulder bone, the coat is too thick and is not safe for use with the car seat.

Xx

The problem with thick coats and snow suits russelmuscle is that on impact the fabric will compress and baby can come out. Even doing the straps up as tight as they will go isn't enough, which is why they advise blankets over the top. Obviously the chance of an accident is small and not something any mum wants to consider, but I think it's only right to give people the advise in order that they can make their own decisions.

Wss^

That photo is to demonstrate that upon impact that's how much the child's coat will compress, therefore leaving the child loose in the seat and not properly restrained.... Those people obviously didn't travel with their child like that they're just demonstrating how slack the harness technically is! Adults shouldn't wear thick coats in the car for the same reason! X

I suppose difference with adults is the seatbelt moves initially anyway then does lock

Thanks for all your replies brill advice . I thought snowsuit was too extreme I was right to go with my gut ! X
