Hi ladies, sorry potentialy new lady to breastfeeding - getting ready for birth!!

I read that Breastfeeding after a section, they recomend you feed on your side only, do you have to do that, or is is comfortable to stay sitting up or laying slightly and feed as normal? I didn't ever sleep /lay on side after any of my sections, and wouldn't think that was very comfy to turn to feed?

Plus lots of ladies say to feed in bed on your side so you c an sleep etc , but what happens if you fall asleep and then forget to wind baby! surely then you have to sit up again and wind ?

Thanks ladies

Can't comment about section as i've never had one, for the first few weeks Tegan would feed for hours in the night so i ended up laying on my side to feed her so i could get some sleep breast fed babies don't get as much wind as bottle fed ones Hun x

Hey, I had a section and successfully breastfed in hospital sat up in bed. I'm not going to lie, it was hard to pull myself up the pillows but once up I just fell asleep in the same position. I had the bed higher than I cot so I could reach Isla.

I do occasionally lie down and feed her but I never fall asleep, she does but I don't wind her.

Emma xx

I have only recently been able to feed laid down, more cos of reflux (it was never pretty ) but I never found he latched on properly... But that might be cos I'm largish chest wise, now he does it himself so it is easier...

Really , can't believe you don't really need to wind bF babies ? that would be an added bonus! and big time saver !!

Well I have had 3 sections, but hope I remember how to sit etc! last one was in 2002!! but two babies went to scbu , so didn't try breastfeeding in the end, so gotta try big time this time

Thanks lots

i only lay n feed noa in the morning when im not so tired. I dont wake him up to wind him either, but if he is hungry enough to want the other boob i wind him before i swap night time.. Daytime i wind him, he burps almost everytime. But i have heard BF babies dont swallow as much air. xx

cant help about the section tho sorry x

I hurt my wrist attempting to feed sat up. I had him in one arm over my shoulder and was trying to push myself up and back against the headboard on one hand. It made a horrible crunch noise and my wrist was sore for days. Because it was sore, I started feeding him in bed on my side and I have to say that I love it. It's a really nice close position and much more relaxing. X

Bf'ing is the best! I didn't manage well after my first section but did well with my two vbac's only feeding a couple of months with my section I'm afraid. I found lying my on side really painful with my section I 50/50 burp breastfed babies it's not necessary but sometimes they can take in some
Wind and get grumpy so I do it as a precaution and find when I do wind her she can bring up allot of wind so maybe I should do it more often?! But it doesn't really seem to bother her too much if I leave her at night I defiantly don't bother burpin. Lol!

I fed sitting up after section, was sore sometimes getting myself into right position but fine once i was there. Tried feeding on side as a solution to him latching on not because of section and it was quite good but I find that I cant get him/me in the right position on my own, will try again when he is a bit bigger as it was quite relaxing.

Lying on my side to BF is damn difficult, they tried to get me to do that first off, I told them to sit me up, and i just got to feeding her while holding her on one side like a rugby ball so that she wouldnt put weight on my tummy, still find that the easiest way to feed her, as i can just lay a pillow under her, and have my hand guide her head to latch, then she will lay there and feed by herself.

Just so u know I breastfeed Alex and he has suffered from bad wind something breastfed babies apparantly don't get, he does and is on colief to help and he does now bring up quite a lot of wind. We got so frustrated in hospital that the mw kept saying that he shouldnt have wind when he clearly did and it seems it is a common misconception that all bf babies dont have wind, they can and Alex is proof of it and I wish he didn't it is a real nightmare for us!!

Blake gets bad wind too. He's quite good at bringing it up himself but he does get it.

I think it's because he's greedy. You should hear the noises he makes when on the boob! Poor thing doesn't take a breath and is then sick. Takes me at least an hour before I can lie him flat as he'll just puke.

i physically lie flat after my section, well i could but it was really painful trying to sit back up, i just got lots of pillows to prop mysef, and fell asleep in the same position,
you still need to wind bf babies, they might not be as windy as bottle fed, but i used to wind just in case
xx

Yeah I had the same problem when i first came home, didnt realise how much i was relying on the moving hospital bed!!

I used to put him on a pillow to lift him into position a bit more...the only time I struggled was str8 after delivery,I had my section at 10pm at night so was early hours by the time I got settled on the ward and matty fed every 10-20 mins ALL night, mainly for comfort. Luckily the nurses on duty were really helpful cos obv I couldn't sit up etc so they were helpin me get him latched on and then takin him off wen he was finished. Make sure it's in ur notes that although this is ur 4th baby. That's it's 1st time breast feeding cos I think they tend to assume u've done it b4 xxx

Even then, make sure you bug them for help! They were rubbish helping me with everything, no one showed me how to change a nappy till she was 3 days old, no one told me how to latch her on, just put her next to me and let me get on with it! Thank god i had looked into breastfeeding stuff loads before hand, or i would have been really screwed!

A few days after she was born i had gotten up to put her in the cot, and couldnt move again, was stuck standing up, couldnt move my legs atall without agonising pain, took em half an hour to get me laid on the bed so they could give me morphine.. and then they left me.. All night unable to move.. the baby in the cot screaming.. I would hit the buzzer and got such a dirty look from the nurse who was on when i asked her to pass me the baby, and then asking each time for help getting her on the boob.

So yeah, Dont be a wimp about bugging them for help, or you wont get anything atall lol

Thanks ladies, great info as always

Yes I will have to remind them I have not done it before even tho they may be tempted to leave me to it.
No one ran through my 34-36 week checklist and so no one has asked me yet how I wish to feed ! ha ha

I bet a Boppy pillow would help you csection girls. I really rely on mine. It frees up my hands and I find it so much comfier than holding him.

I have one very similar to the boppy, and its a real help, but not as supportive of baby as i would like, and not really thick enough to get the height from my lap to boob. I do use it every feed though, would be stuck without it. (And was when i got out of hospital, i waddled my way out with 6 day old baby to get one as soon as i was home!)
