Booked for sweep

Has anyone got any experience of a stretch and sweep? Are they effective?

I had one at 3 days overdue, my midwife told me my cervix was unfavourable, closed, far back etc etc! She said I was no cm dilated and I almost left in tears (I hated being overdue). She told me I could have my bloody show but not to think anything of it as its just because she had her hand up me! She booked me in for another sweep the week after as she thought it was highly unlikely I'd go into labour before then. I didnt have the bloody show but I did go into labour 4 days later xxx

I had two sweeps with DD. can't remember the dates but was something like 5 and 8 days overdue. Both were fine, but I've had previous issues with smears etc so having internals didn't worry me. Unfortunately neither sweep worked for me. Didn't have a show or any pains. Ended up induced at 10 days over and they found DD was breech on day 2 when they broke my waters.

just wanted to say ive had sweeps with both babas.
with my lg i had a sweep, had show and pains around 12 hours later another 10or so hours after that she was in my arms
with my lb i had a sweep around 3.30 starting having pains around 30 minutes later and he was born at 11.35 that night have to mention i was 3cm dilated when the mw carried out the sweep.
after your first you can have sweeps from 39 weeks ive been told but my lb wasnt ready until 40+4

I've had no signs yet and the sweep was yesterday morn DTD as well in getting lots of braxtons but they just don't lead to anything so frustrating

long walks and birthing ball perhaps?
all i can suggest is keeping active but so close to DD i know its hard not to anyway

Glad to hear a positive story about a sweep! My MW said she'll give me one next week (i'll be 39 weeks with my second) and since then all I have had is people telling me they dont work anyway!! Your story has given me hope once again Thanks x

I've had them with 2 out of 3 pregnancies. They can be quite uncomfortable and make you feel faint Nd sick so be prepared.

There is limited evidence I think as to their effectiveness too. NICErecommend them from 41 weeks, if I remember correctly.

Sex/semen is good for softening the cervix, as it contains natural prostaglandin too.

Just don't expect miracles with a 'sweep' lol. It may help it may not.
