Hiya Ladies,

So i have a rare blood clotting disorder (Factor 2 Leiden) which means my pregnancy is classed as high risk as there is obviously more of a risk of clotting whilst pregnant. I am around 5 weeks now, i had to stop taking warfarin as soon as i found out and move onto clexane injections into the belly twice daily (which bloody hurts)!
I was wondering if anyone else is going through anything similar and if so how are you getting on?!
i know i have to be seen for everything earlier aswell as i had my midwide appointment straight away then i think i will have scan early aswell

Is that factor v Leiden? As I have that , I'm not pregnant but did t realise you needed injections or is yours different xxx

You can also inject into your thighs too :) x

Its similar to Factor v Leiden, just abit rarer! I'm not sure if they would put you onto Clexane injections, i only have to because i have to take warfarin every day for life now, so its a replacement for warfarin whilst pregnant!
I've heard about doing it into the thigh but midwife wasnt sure so going to ask hospital when i go next week! i think that would be so much better than in the belly! xx

I did it inthe thigh after LO was born and thats how I do it for patients at work :)

You should always give your clexane into the stomach area. Research has proven that absorption in this site is optimum and it is regarded as 'best practice' to inject into stomach.

I dont have personal experience of your clotting disorder, but used clexane with both of my ivf cycles - so I can sympathise as they do nip a bit! Don't rub the site as this will encourage bruising.

I hope you get on ok hon, it's good that you're being looked after so well :)

xxxx

MWs give it in the thighs at my local hospital and we are taught to use abdomen and thighs... In fact its how its done across the hospital, never heard of it being less effective x

Babyem, just because you've never heard of it being less effective doesn't mean it isn't. You shouldn't really give any nursing/medical type advice that you can't back up by research. All manufacturers of low molecular weight heparin recommend deep subcutaneous injection into the abdomen - due to clinical trials proving this is the optimum area for absorption, with the best distribution of sc tissue.

Just because they do it like that at your local hospital doesn't make it right and doesn't make it research based practice! For surgical prophylaxis of dvt, the thigh may be ok (assuming there is plenty of sc tissue) but for someone with a clotting disorder, where it's important to optimise the dose and absorbtion then the abdomen should be used.

OP - sorry for hijacking your thread but it's important you follow the advice you've been given by your medical professionals, which I assume was to inject into your abdomen as this is what you've been doing.

xxxx

Im not saying its not true, I said I hadnt heard of it before and its not practice in our trust. We are taught the upto date guidelines and havent been told this, however I will be researching this following this thread...
And I didnt suggest the OP not follow the advice given.

Anyway, I hope someone who has experienced this will be able to offer some advice and support xx

when I had to have clexane while pregnant I had to have it in my tummy, one student did it in my upper leg and was told not to and I needed tomorrows one in my stomach :( I hope someone can be of more help as I was only on it for a short while, I was on bed rest with those awful socks!!

I had to do fragmin thru pregnancy, it is a real headache. I was also told tummy only. I found it best to put ice on before and after and lightly pull a section of skin whilst standing up then no rubbing!
It is worth it in the end.

I am a carrier of factor v lieden (not the same as yours) but apparently make me 10x more likely to clot than the average person. Anyway I had to inject something (can't remember what) into my stomach after birth for 10 days or so. Hope you get on fine with it xx

awwww thank you all so much for your help!! i now dont rub after injectiing and that seems to be helping with the brusing (mine seems to lump up under the skin aswell). On weds i have an appointment at the hospital with my specialist so i will double check about where is best for injections (with my condition) and then update here after as it might be useful!

thanks again xxxx

Hi

I had a blood clot prior to being pregnant so have to inject everyday - have been since week 12.

Can't do my tummy, have done my legs since day 1 and this is where the mw showed me and said it was fine.

There is no way I could ever inject my stomach :(

I am glad I spotted this - I have Factor V Leiden and MTHFR, Im just wondering what peoples experiences have been - I have seen a hematologist and see my Consultant for my pregnancy regularly, and they have decided I don't have to do anything, no Clexane (as I expected as my sister has MTHFR, but not factors) or even asprin! I have Clexane when I fly, but that's the only time I have had to do anything (other than avoid the pill)

I have been told I will need clexane for 6 week post partum though.

I'm waiting on my results back for "Sticky blood", currently been out on 75mg of Asprin in the meantime, my first results came back as abnormal so they want to retest me.
I'll be stalking this thread!

Amy- how did your results go?

I'm still surprised my consultant doesn't want me on asprin or clexane (mainly as my sister was on clexane and doesn't have factor V like me, but a lower risk factor- MTHFR!) I'm 29weeks 4days now...

I have factor v leiden I'm shocked others on here have it too! Thought I was the only one. I injected clexane every day whilst pregnant and for 6 weeks after birth. I injected in my thighs as instructed by the midwife although she did say I could inject in to the fleshy bit of my tummy but after a while my bump was so solid there was no fleshy bit left lol. Plus I was scared of jagging the baby (daft I know! ). I ended up with the most bruised thighs you've ever seen!

My belly is soooooooooo bruised and i have months of this left!! mine end up with big hard lumps underneath where i have to inject into the same section so much, not good!
Clare I'm surprised they dont have you on asprin at least?
Amy do you have your results back yet? i remember years ago when i had the test they took ages but not sure if they are any quicker these days!
I'm suprised how many people have this condition...more common than you think isn't it! xx

I'm still waiting to start my clexane jabs, gp said haematology consultant said to wait as not needed until well into tri 2 but last pregnancy I had to inject daily from day1! Mw spoke to me earlier on phone to arrange booking in as my original referal letter was sent to wrong dept and i had to go back for another one (i have a very old gp and this isn't first referal he has messed up!) so wont be seen for another few weeks but she was shocked and surprised I'm not on clexane yet but said if gp rang consultant and they said to wait, just hold off until I go in on the 13th May and discuss it with the midwife and haematology consultant together. Am just going to make the most of a bruise free bump for a bit longer lol xx
