OMG I can't believe I'm here.
Sunday 20th Jan 1am - my due date! Contractions started up strong again. Joys I thought another sleepless nights false alarm. Tried to ignore them but at 1:30am I felt a pop and my pjs were soaked.
By 2:30am I swore at hubby to call the midwife as I knew something was wrong. Contractions still irregular but my back was hurting more with each one unlike before.
3am a midwife arrived, was snowing outside again and normal mw snowed in. Country and side roads like an ice ring.
3:3am midwife says definitely in labour this time. No progress after an hour so she went to another call (with my consent) and said she'll be back at 10am with gas and air just in case I need it unless we call in sooner.
10am midwife arrives back but is very worried about the snow. By now my back is making me want to vomit and swear and scream more than the actual contractions.
Yup Katie is still back to back!
Contractions still irregular but 4cms dilated. MW tries ringing round for another midwife as they prefer to have 2 per homebirth. Most are snowed in (still snowing)
By 11am I was crying for pain relief or to chop my back out as it was not hurting as much as when I had my riding accident. Gas and air was set up but after 3 puffs of it I started to have an asthma attack.
After discussion with MW and hospital consultant an ambulance was sent out at noon. 6cms Dilated.
When it arrived I was loaded up (still in my nighty and dressing gown lol) whilst hubby did a final made dash round the house for hospital stuff and sort dog out.
Ambulance ride was scary! Just getting out of the side streets is was skidding and spinning all over the shop which didn't help the pain during my contractions either
Anyway finally got there (still snowing) and set into a room by 1pm. By the time my notes were gone over and consulted talked to we decided due to my stupid back condition and the fact Katie was still back to back, that we would go straight to a mobile epi.
OMG I could kiss the person who invented that. I could still wobbly walk to the loo which they encouraged often, could still feel the contractions but no more back pain! For the first time in 14 years I had a back again \o/
I wasn't allowed to eat at all in the hospital during my labour incase they had to cut me open due to how irregular my contractions were. (but when I did have them, they were big ones)
At 5:30pm They were going to pop my waters and put me on a drip but as they were about to check my dilation progress my waters went with a gush bigger than a gush. Even the MW was shocked hehe. I was 8cms!
The doctors and mws couldn't believe how quickly I was dilating with so few contractions!
7:30pm I was fully dilated. So they told me to wait and rest for an hour before the pushing starts. Was going to have a nap as they gave me my 3rd top up of epi but they wouldn't stop talking to me!
8:30pm I started to push! Now I understand what they mean when people say if you feel like pushing you'll want to push and nothing will stop you as they are sooooooo right!
10:30pm I was starting to pass out from all the pushing and lack of food and not having my metformin at all that day. Plus not sleep for 24 hours and only 3 hours night before had taken it's toll.
They HAD to get her out especially as her head was tilted wrong (plus still back to back etc) so I was cut and the sucky thing put on her to help.
Can't remeber much after that other than having an oxygen mask on and another drip up to stop bleeding and something heavy and wet on my chest (Katie)
I am upset that my close to passing out (BP went too low + exhaustion + blood loss etc) meant I couldn't really see or bond with Katie at all at birth.
BUT I'm glad I ended up in the hospital with all the help or things could of ended up so differently.
Was transferred to another ward to recover over night etc and hubby had to go home. He wasn't even allowed on ward.
Was another sleepless night of hell for me
Spent rest of the day in hospital and slowly started to bond with Katie.
In the end I had a natural internal tear and the man made cut. Both are still very sore.
The good stuff!
Katie Ellen Pottrell was born at 10:45pm at 6lbs 11oz!
Managed to get a few hours sleep but got no routine yet especially as she's a bit colicky. Still not fully bonded with her yet but actually kissed her for first time this morning when trying to calm one of her cramps down.
Still very emotional and feeling surreal but slowly bonding. Hopefully when she starts to respond to her name then we'll click.
