NEW MUM ALERT

Hello guys,
I am a new mum to be. I would like to ask a question regarding baby scans.
I am 9Weeks & 5Days pregnant now, I have just had my appointment come through the post for my 12Weeks scan - The dating scan.
However, I am on holiday from 1st-11th September, so I won’t get my scan (12Weeks) when I’m actually 12Weeks. Actually I’ll be just 13Weeks.
As I’m actually 13Weeks will this scan tell the sex of my baby?

Also I have had another appointment for the 26th September to go and see a consultant, regarding my pregnancy. What in this appointment will actually be discussed? (This is my very first appointment with the consultant)

Thanks Charlotte :)

You usually find out the sex of the baby at 20 weeks. If you’re feeling particularly impatient you can pay privately for a scan and find out as early as 16 weeks.

The twelve week scan is to establish your due date, that the pregnancy is progressing well and they offer screening for Down’s syndrome and other chromosomal disorders.

It depends why you’ve been referred to a consultant as to what they’ll discuss. It’s usually just a chat about whatever it is that makes you high risk enough to have been referred and how that’ll impact the pregnancy and any adjustments that might need to be made

At 13 weeks all babies have a genital nub that looks like a penis. It will either shrink away and become girl bits or grow and become boy bits. Early gender scans aren't reliable before 16 weeks and if you want to know at 16 weeks you will have to pay for a private scan. Otherwise you'll find out at your 20 week NHS scan (assuming baby co-operates!).

Thanks for responding to my post!
I do i go about getting a payed/private scan to see the sex of my baby?
(If i wanna proceed with this) xx

Google private scan places near where you live - there’s usually one in most towns

Please feel free to still comment on my post. All comment will be very much appreciated!
Thanks Charlotte

Just something else to consider... I booked my gender scan for 15+1 and they couldn't tell because the nub wasn't totally gone yet (too small for a boy, but too big for a girl). When I went back at 16+3 the nub was gone and baby was clearly a girl. So even if a place will do it before 16 weeks, I'd say don't bother as there's a good chance they won't be able to tell 100%.

Adding to what everyone else has said, might be worth not booking the gender scan until you have had your 12 week NHS one, to make sure they date your pregnancy accordingly. Just so you're not going for your gender scan a few days too early. x
