Are you getting scans after 20 weeks?

Is anyone else getting a scan later on after the anomaly 20 week scan? I'm in Cambridge and wont get any more.. Seems a bit risky, doesn't it?

My baby was breech last scan and would be nice to know if she turned for example.. I know they can feel but doesn't feel as reassuring. Also, what if the baby grows a lot and will be huge which can cause complications? I am very petite so a little worried about a big baby! :)

Are you getting more scans on the NHS if everything normal at 20 weeks or did you go for a private one later as well?

thanks :) xx

Im in surrey we dont get anymore. They feel around to get babys position if they think breach then you get a scan
You will have scans if they think baby is growing to fast or slow aswell. X

And i went private at 29 weeks for a 4d one and they checked baby x

Generally there are no more scans after the 20 wk one unless you book a private one. Or as blueclass says the midwife suspects a breech baby from palpitation or your fundal height increases or slows down. I have had several scans this trimester due to baby measuring small and they are keeping an eye on his growth, it was picked up by my fundal height being below the 10th centile and at my 4d scan baby measured on the 5th so was referred for a growth scan xx

I had extra scans due to high risk pregnancy but in my first 3 pregnancies I didn't have any more after 20 weeks, it's standard x

Normally most hosps only do 2 scans.

Dating and then 20wk.

I have had 3 nhs scans since my 20wk.

One was to check baby size as bump was measuring 3 weeks ahead.
Other 2 were for breech (i had a private scan that confirmed breech at 36wks) so nhs wanted to check themselves and then needed a follow up to make sure he had turned.

I had 2 growth scans at 32&36wks in my first pregnancy due to repeat reduced movement xx

I am a low risk pregnancy and was last time so we have been offered only 2 under NHS. I had 4 last time but one was at epu early and one at the end as I was measuring too small. He measured small at the scan then still came a nice healthy weight.

This time I've had a private early and gender, then dating. Due my 20w one and I think we may get a 3/4D one too, just see how we go.

xxxxx

I am Northants and we only routinely get 2 scans- I have 3 more to come for growth scans due to booking in weight.

I've got a 4d scan booked for next Saturday when I'll be 29 weeks +3 xx

Normally just two, aye, but if breech at 20 wks, there's no worries - plenty of room and time for them to flip about! They have a good feel to check position, but you can tell later on anyway when you're getting feet and knees in the ribs :)
We've had extra scans on the nhs because one of the kidneys hasn't formed properly, but generally, if the mw isn't concerned about things, that's good! You can always book private scans for reassurance if you feel it necessary ;-)

2 scans are standard but your 20 week one isn't compulsory, it's an offer.

I had a private one at 29 weeks last time & then I needed growth scans with the nhs every 2 weeks at 32 weeks until he was born at 38 weeks. So they will give them but only if there's an urgent medical requirement to as they're are radiation waves bouncing off your baby each time you have a scan x

Thanks!

Don't think scans are dangerous ( according to every nurse I have spoken to ) but guess they don't give them because of the cost.

So basically, when they feel my belly from now on they can tell if there is a growth issue or anything else? :)

Might have a private one at about 32-34 weeks

xx

Ultrasounds don't use radiation so there are no radiation waves bouncing off baby :)

Exactly, have heard of no evidence at all it will harm the baby unless they do it all the time every day perhaps or hold the ultrasound probe still at one spot for a very long time ( because of the heat ) which they never do.

Last time they checked my fundal height by pressing the belly and seems like she was measuring 27 weeks which I was at the time so assume this is how they measure development of baby without actually doing an ultrasound? she was still breech then since the head was poking out on the side high up. Nurse told me to feel it and was soo cute! I am too scared to feel my belly normally :)

I guess what I am scared of is going into labor with a breech baby that is too big!

Thanks for all your replies!

At some point they should start measuring your bump with a tape measure and plotting it on a graph - that gives a general idea of the growth of the baby. The average is that it measures the same as the amount of weeks you are, but it can be out by a few centimetres and still of no concern! Mine always measures 3 or 4 cm over, but it's consistent (and when I've had the kidney scans, the specialist measures the baby and it is totally normal for the gestation!). I think they worry more if the graph gets inconsistent, so suddenly gets much bigger or drops growth.
As for position, they can usually feel the head in the last weeks to see that it's in the right place - I was told they can keep changing right up until the last month! Mine's been good and has been head down for weeks though :)
Nothing like mother's intuition though, so if you feel worried and want a private scan, it's better to be reassured than stressed! X

After our experience I would definitely have a scan after 20 weeks even if we had to go private. I thought about it and now wish more than anything we had because he was small for my height, weight and weeks gestation and placenta was possibly a bit small so maybe it started to fail.. We don't know but if it is the case I would feel a bit angry at not being a high risk patient when it took us so long to get to this stage and after having loads of bleeding at the start.

Peace of mind is worth everything Hun xx

Thanks Lou for answering me when you are going through all this :hugs:

I think I will have one. She is measuring on the smaller side and has done all the time but MW says its because I am petite, quite slim and short so she takes after me. I hope they are right. Will have a private in a couple of weeks when I am 33-34 weeks to check all ok. It took us ages as well to get pregnant but not classified as high risk.. Haven't had bleeding like you had though.

I hope you get lots of love from everyone around you. Have been thinking a lot about what happened to you the last couple of days and it breaks my heart every time xxxx

Id have one hun.
I had a 4d scan at 28wks this time and then paid for another reassurance at 36wks as i was convinced he was breech when mw kept sayig he wasnt.
He was!

But later luckily turned.

I always feel for the sake of checking if ur ever in doubt about anything then its worth the money xx

Thanks :)

I feel ok now since she is moving a lot and have no doubt baby is healthy but the thought of not knowing size and position closer to birth scares me!

xx

Just think! Once shes out and uve done all the hard bit pushing it wont matter hehe!!

My first was 9lb 9.5oz so im expecting similar again! Of not bigger lol! Ven tho hea growing roughly the same from my scans. I hate how out scans can also be though!! Xx
