Hi,

Myself and my husband are planning on trying to start a family sometime in the next couple of years. For various reasons, we're going to have to use a sperm donor but I know nothing about how to go about it - costs, do I do it through the GP, what's the best thing for me to do to increase the chances of it working etc...

I'm planning on making an appt with my GP to chat about it but would love to hear if anyone here has any first-hand experience.

Thanks :)

I dont have any experience but I didnt want to read and run. If your GP knows about your not being able to TTC with conventional methods perhaps he could refer you to a fertility specialist or something appropriate?

i know of a couple who used a private doner. They paid him and for a solicitor to draw up terms and conditions. I;m not sure how they found him but i imagine it would be easier to use an annonemous doner through your GP. Good luck xx

Yeah I'm hoping so. As I said, I haven't got a clue about any of this at the moment and the internet seems vague on the subject - most of the stuff deals with infertility, which isn't the problem in our case really...I'm hoping to conceive naturally, but with donor sperm. But again, I don't really know how possible this is.

Well it's definitely possible. I know on another forum I'm a member of there are female same sex parents who have used private sperm donors and had success. :)

someone I talk to used a private spern donor too... but I haven't a clue how she went about it... hope ur GP is helpful... Good luck xx

i hope you get the answers your looking for

Hi,

I am also looking into sperm doner, although i am single so might be harder! Don't really know where to start!

I think you basically have two options:
Private treatment at a ferility clinic OR using an online meet and exchange site.

If you go through a fertility clinic, the sperm will be from a registered donor who will be health screened.

You will also get to review some profiles to find the kind of donor you would like.

You can select a donor that has zero rights regarding the child.

You will be inseminated using IUI when you are due to ovulate and i think it would be at about £1000-£2000.

If you decide to meet up with a stranger off the internet and aquire a fresh sample from him to inseminate yourself with in privacy, it should be much cheaper but there is the risk he will have STIs, genetic abnormalities and he may one day decide to seek out his child.

Are you using someone you know? If so, you would need to draw up a legal document surrendering all of his rights. Good luck hun xx
