Here’s my birth story girls!

As some of you know I live on an island and so from 38 weeks I had to go and stay on the mainland in a wee bungalow by myself so I was desperate for baby to come early! However that was not to happen and on December 2nd (41+1) I woke up feel so depressed I was very seriously considering ringing up the midwifes and demanding they bring forward my induction!

I had my mum and sister staying with me the night before and my mum was staying Sunday night too but I was feeling so rubbish that I stayed in bed until about 2pm. Thinking about it now I was actually having niggling pains but I was adamant baby wasn't going to make an appearance any time soon!

At around 4.30pm on the Sunday I started getting mild cramps, but nothing that major and I didn't take much notice of them...UNTIL I got up to put my washing up to dry and was agony having to breathe through this pain! Yet again, I dismissed it...but then I had another one about 15 mins later so I text OH and told him. There was a ferry at 7 but we weren't convinced this was the real thing and he was working at the time anyway so we agreed he wouldn't come over because there was an earlyish ferry on the Monday morning and his boss told him he knew a guy with a boat if it seriously kicked off!

Mum began vaguely timing the pains I was having and was convinced it was the real deal - I still wasn't convinced but about 9.30pm decided to go to bed and try and get some sleep in between pains as they had slowed right down to about once every 25 mins. About 11ish the pains started getting quite regular, about every 12 mins and lasting at least a minute. Mum couldn't sleep as she was so excited so came through and timed them for me whilst I tried to doze between them although that was totally impossible! At 3am they were about 7-8 mins apart, and lasting really long! Like 1 and a half minutes! Ouch. I decided to have a bath but by the time I got out about 4ish contractions was only a couple of minutes apart and I was feeling a lot of pressure. I rang the midwife about 4.30am and she came out to check me and told me I was 6cm dilated!!!!

Decided to go up to the maternity unit at this point as I was in a lot of pain so the midwife took us up and started running the pool. I rang OH and told him he'd better be on that ferry at 8am and that I was 6cm - he couldn't believe it! I think I got in the pool about 6.30am and then eventually decided on having some gas and air about an hour later but that made me sick so I didn't use too much of it during the birth. OH arrived shortly before 9am and our little baby girl was born in the pool at 11.20am weighing a very healthy 8lbs 5oz! Had skin to skin for a good few minutes afterwards but I started feeling very faint so didn't get a chance to get her latched and feeding for a couple of hours after. Delivered the placenta without the injection (although I actually specified I wanted it!) and then had to have a couple of wee stitches - had much more pain relief for that than I did the actual birth as I was so petrified!

After I was all washed and sorted managed to get her latched and we’ve been bf-ing really well ever since! Was discharged from hospital 4 hours after I gave birth and got home on the ferry at 4pm :)

Unfortunately 11 days postnatal I ended up getting taken off the island by lifeboat and transferred to hospital in Paisley because of a PPH. Had to get a D&C because there were still membranes inside me and my iron dropped to 73 so nearly ended up getting a blood transfusion. Luckily it picked up a bit and I got home again the next day! Felt a bit rubbish about it all because I had such an amazing birth I felt it kind of took the gloss off it being so ill afterwards, but it was all worth it for my gorgeous little girl!
