Hi everyone!!

Wondered if anyone could shed some light for me.

I had an early scan today sonographer dated at 5+2 based on the size of the gestation sac. We saw a teeny tiny 'thing' which she said is most probably a yolk sac. She did say it's too early to see a fetal pole which I knew.

However she has said that I have significant free fluid in the POD 26mm depth and also a corpus Luteum measuring 36mm (all she said about that was that it would explain the cramps I've been having on my right side) she advised that I see my GP but gave me no other information.

I thought too much fluid in your POD was a bad thing? And should I be worried about the size of the corpus Luteum?

Freaking out a little

This is the scan

I don't have any expert knowledge but I don't think that's fair that she would say those things without giving you a little more information to stop you worrying to at least assist you in your next step. If she has advised to see GP though I would go and see her/him ASAP just to reassure yourself. It's always hard not to worry isnt it? I had a scan at 9 weeks with my DD and I wouldn't do it that early again. It was just a small bean shaped thing and although the heartbeat was good and strong it made me really worried that it wasn't developed enough.

good luck x

some bits I found online:

Fluid in the pouch can be seen in numerous conditions. The commonest is soon after ovulation which is very much normal and happens due to release of blood and fluid from the follicle rupture site in the ovary.

The corpus luteum is typically very large relative to the size of the ovary; in humans, the size of the structure ranges from under 2 cm to 5 cm in diameter...

some research: (out of 1800 women) At 5 to 9 weeks' gestation, the mean CL diameter was 19.3 mm, with no statistically significant variation across each gestational week. Corpus luteum size then statistically significantly declined at 10 to 13 weeks' gestation, with a mean diameter of 16.85 mm. Of 237 women in whom both ovaries were visualized at 10 to 13 weeks' gestation, a CL was seen in 82% of cases. A statistically significant right-sided bias was observed in both groups (54% at 5–9 wk gestation, 56% at 10–13 wk).
There is no scientific evidence that the size or shape of the corpus luteum in early pregnancy is associated with any pregnancy complications such as an early miscarriage.

After ovulation the corpus luteum, the area inside the ovary from which the egg was ejected, produces a hormone called progesterone. Progesterone prepares the lining of the uterus for implantation. After implantation the corpus luteum will continue to produce progesterone to support the developing pregnancy until the placenta takes over around week 10-12 weeks

Thank you Holly! Congratulations!! I will be phoning Gp first thing in the morning x

I had a corpus luteum at my 6 week scan which was 4.5cm (I think 5cm is considered large enough to be concerned about), when I went back at 9 weeks it had shrunk to 3.6cm so they are predicting it will be gone altogether by the time I have my 12 week scan next week.

Can't offer any info on the fluid though, snogoraogers are notoriously lacking compassion and bedside manor so try not to worry to much x

Thank you all!! Baby pickle glad to hear yours is shrinking! I'm going to book in with my GP today and try and relax as much as I can.

I called at 8.30 but by time I got through no same day appointments left. Next prebookable appointment is 28th June which ive booked provisionally xx

Goodness me, that's crazy! It's not like that at all here, but I'm in Wales and I think it may work differently here
