Hello all,

Was wondering if those of you who have already had antenatal checks around 16 weeks will be able to advise me?

I'm due for my 16 week check next week, and instead of seeing a midwife, it'll be with a nurse from my surgery (and possibly a GP too). I was wondering what's usually involved in these checks? The reason I ask is because my GP practice doesn't really seem to have a clue when it comes to antenatal care; at first they told me that all my checks would be with my midwife, but when my MW told me that I should be seeing the GP at 16 weeks, the GP still told me to speak to the MW. In the end, it was the MW who had to make the appt for me, and I don't know why, but the surgery has made an appt for me with the nurse. Hence, getting a tad apprehensive about the antenatal care I'll be receiving from the surgery. My MW says that they should be measuring my blood pressure and testing my urine. Do they normally listen to the baby's heartbeat as well at this stage? (BTW, this is happening again at 22 weeks too, the next time I get to see the MW won't be til 28 weeks!) Just wanted to be prepared so that I can ask for whatever they might omit to do.

Thanks in advance.

Daisy

when i had my 16 week check it was at the hospital and it was only to get my bloods results but at normal antenatel visits you have blood pressure, urine checked (so take a sample) they normally feel for babys position and listento the babys heartbeat and then have a genral chat about anything you might be concered about.

hope this helps a little bit

Hiya I just had my 16 week checkup yesterday (I was a bit late) but I saw the mw. She checked my blood pressure and urine and listened to the babys heartbeat and meaured me. And then answered any questions that I had.

Hi

Well at every monthly prenatal they check my blood pressure , urine, weight and fundal height and also listen to LO's heart beat they have been doing this since i was 12 weeks . But so far it looks like its way different here in Canada so im not sure what they do over there .

I forget to say I have my next apt at 25 weeks cos they count the 20 scan as a visit! I was only weighted at my first apt haven't been since.

Who you see will vary depending on what arrangements are in place at your surgery.

I am supposed to see the MW every 4 weeks from but I haven't seen her yet as she cancelled 2 surgeries. In place of the MW I saw a GP who checked my BP, urine, felt my tummy, listened for the baby's heartbeat and measured the height of fundus (size of womb). These are the same checks as the MW usually does.

I've had 16 and 20 week check ups at my doctors surgery. I also saw the hospital consultant at 14 weeks and will again at 28 weeks.

There's a lot of variation these days. When I had my son 17 years ago I saw the surgery nurse and GP for every check up.
