OMG what a horrific story in the news.
A 14 year old girl was attacked by 5 dogs, Staffordshire bull terriers and some other kind of mastiff.
I have a 14 year old, such a tragic story.
Horrible to read :( x

Very nasty apparently she was eating a meat pie and the dogs have gone for her to get the pie. But no one really knows.

So so scary.
I'm a real dog lover but these stories really scare me. They are becoming far too frequent for me.
I've stopped walking my tiny dog in the evening, too many lads about with what I call posing dogs. I'm scared one will go for her and she only weighs 3 pounds, she'd be killed instantly xx

I know the whole its not the breed its the owner but why would people choose these dogs out of the hundreds of breeds? For the 'look at my hard dog factor' -- i know not everyone is like that but a lot are and normally the dog ends up suffering.

I know it's a tragic story, and nobody really knows what happened in this case, but so much of it comes down to lack of training and appropriate care of the animal. And the wrong people having the wrong kind of dog!

I heard this on the radio today so so sad :-( that poor girl eaten alive

I agree completely about the owner having a massive massive effect on the dogs personality, and believe me I am a dog lover through and through but it always seems to be the same breeds.when was the last time a Labrador killed someone?
Do you see what I'm saying?
One theory is of course that these "hard" nuts chose dogs of a particular look and stature and teach them violence (sted heads wouldn't be seen with a yorkie!) hence why these breeds have their names dragged through the dirt?? I don't know but I do know that I cross the road when I see certain breeds coming my way x

If the right owner had one of these dogs, and trained them correctly, disciplined them properly, exercised them enough and fed them appropriately, then I really don't think we'd have as many stories like this.

My friend has two Rotweillers, a Labrador and a 2 year old son, but the dogs were well trained even before the child came along.

It really pisses me off tbh I've got 2 Staffies who are daft as a brush. Tia is 12 years old and reggie is 4. If They are bought up to be nasty they will be. ALL breeds of dogs can be nasty and should never be 100% trusted. As for why people choose 'these type of breeds' over any other because they are in the main lovely dogs. Staffordshire bull terriers are actually known as the nanny dog because of their temperament and the way they are with children.
they only high light stories where a staffy or pit bull type is involved because they want to ban these type of dogs.
Not having a go here but It's close to my heart because it annoys me that they all get tarred with the same brush.

I do think this is it, they pick a 'hard' looking breed and then cant train or control them and the dog ends up with the blame, some dogs need more training to make them 'safe' than others and its down to people taking on a breed they dont know anything about.

I have a springer but he is going to training and not allowed alone with Alice ever, even though he has never shown any aggression i wont take the risk. x

I do agree about the owners taking a big responsibility. I have a rottie and a 3 year old and 15 month old. My dog doesn't dare go anywhere near my kids when they are eating. I think I've brought my dog up very well with training etc. I trust my dog 100% and people think im crazy leaving my dog in a room with my kids because of the breed. It's very sad. People cross the road to get away from my dog when out walking x

But you've obviously put effort and commitment into training your dog, which is how it should be. Dogs need to know where they are in the pecking order, and that you and your children are in charge.

Yeah but they don't train them or look after them. This may be stereotypical but there are loads of (typically) teen lads or lads in their 20's, in "the clobber" in little groups and they always have one of these dogs. They think it makes them look solid. I think they look like a gang of pricks but there you go.
The dog is always wearing an oversized studded collar thing, to add to the look yknow. They are a nightmare and do intimidate a lot of nice people.
Funnily though, I saw the lad round the corner, he's not a bad lad, a bit tough round the edges. I'm out doing my front garden and he walks past with the swag, black tracksuit, hood up etc. I say "you ok lad?" He's says "am I fuck" and as he comes around the wall he's got a little poodle on a lead with a bow in it's hair "gotta walk me mums dog haven't I!" I did laugh x

Yea defo! My dog is as much part of our family as the kids but different rules obviously and she knows where she stands when it comes to the kids! X

Haha that's funny! But I agree! Take the dog away n they aint nothing x

Its horrific and such a tragedy and i mostly agree with all Thats been said. It is the owner not the dog etc etc.

Putting that to the side... In what kind of state were those dogs in to attack for a meat pie? I mean Blimey. And when dogs attack they always go for the neck. Poor poor girl. Xx

Tapatalking :-D Can't see tickers...

This story is such a shame poor girl. I do agree though, people do tend to pick staffs to look 'hard' and to scare people unfortunately.

My OHs parents have staffies & I have a cross & they're all so kind and loving.

I really do think it depends on the owner definitely.

It's not just staffs that do things like this although the news likes to portray them as bad dogs. Wasn't long ago a jack Russell killed a newborn :(

I can understand what you are saying and it would piss me off if I had one of the breeds that was in these stories. I do think it's natural for people to be cautious though when you hear it on multiple occasions.
The little lad that was killed in Liverpool a few years ago doesn't live far from me and it caused a ripple of fear around here regarding dogs. Everyone was scared that there would be more attacks if legislation wasn't brought in.
Another little tot had her face bitten by a dog whilst in her buggy about 3 weeks ago not far from me. It's scary.
It's scary as a parent AND as a dog owner. I don't want some nasty dog attacking my children or my dog when we walk in the park.
As I said, I'm sure these breeds are just picked "to look hard" but unfortunately it has given them a bad name x

True tho, I got pounced on and bitten on the arm by my aunts German Shepard when I was about 6. Because I had a digestive biscuit in my hand! The dog knew me and wasn't a nasty dog- shows they can turn at anytime xx

Totally off topic but can I see a pic of your ickle dog? I love dogs.
I'm also one to say that its the owner and not the dog. I had a staffy before when Eva was born and that dog adored her!
Now have a lurcher and a 15 year old collie and theyre just as nice. Its all how you train a dog and treat them. I treat mine like babies
