So I'm 20 weeks today and had my letter through about my whooping cough vaccine! I'm pretty needle phobic so anything about vaccines makes me clam up with fear! Taking blood at my booking in appointment caused me to shake and cry! I hate needles with a passion! It's that bad I contemplated not having it but then I know that automatically makes me out to be an arsehole, and a selfish one at that! It's one of those things I have no escape over..and that scares me more!

I've read some awful things about it :( which makes my fear and unease much worse! Some of the side effects I've read about have been genuinely awful :(

So..reassure me!..im not making a mistake having it..am I?

I've had it in both pregnancies, both times it did give me an achey arm for a few days, and the second time I had cold symptoms 3-4 days after (I don't know if the linked or not) but nothing major. I'd have it again in any future pregnancies.

I get a lot of joint and muscle pain the day after., but it's not the whooping cough part I react to. It's the Polio Tetanus and Diptheria part and I reacted to it in the same way as a teenager without the whooping cough bit. Looking at the side effect list, the joint pain reaction is rare. (Clearly just me making a meal out of it). In terms of the actual jab, it was a bit of a scratch and my arm ached a bit after. Most people only experience a sore arm for a few hours after. My nurse said you can sometimes get a slight temp, but just to take some paracetamol.

No reaction at all for me other than a bruise and a tender upper arm for a couple of days x

I had the whouping cough and flu vaccine on tuesday (in each arm). Apart from tender arms (like youve overdone it on arm day at the gym) the next day, i feel absolutely fine.

Sorry to say but I felt like absolute dog shit for two days after mine this time! Not bad with my first though so who knows!

I had it first pregnancy and other than a slightly sore arm the evening after had no aide effects. Will deffo get it again this time,it'll be over in seconds and then its one more thing you can relax about when baby is hear rather than worrying. You'll be fine xx

Omg. I didn't realise you were pregnant! Congratulations on a sticky :)

My arm just felt like I had been punched hard and got dead arm lol.

Hope all goes well with your pregnancy! Xx

No side effects from me, just the odd moment of a tender arm when I raised it/leaned on it. Xx

I had my whooping cough vaccine yesterday in my left arm and I also had the flu jab vaccine in my right arm straight after, too. Today, both of my arms are quite achy but nothing too severe. Other than that I've not had any other symptoms as of yet. I try to have the flu jab vaccine every year - pregnant or not, and the last few years it has given me flu like symptoms. I'm hoping since my body is different this time round, things will be different.

My midwife advised me to have the whooping cough vaccine as she said that if the baby gets whooping cough then it can give them brain damage - so I knew as soon as she advised me of this I was going to have it done for the safety of my unborn child. I can't vouch for the fear of needles as I have always been fine with them and have an extremely high pain tolerance, but just know my thoughts are with you SebbiesMum.

If you do have the vaccine done, I am sure afterwards you will feel proud that you did something you feared doing just to keep your unborn child safe. There will always be stigma around any kind of health related thing, so try not to read too much into it - especially in the dark places of the internet!! Everyone is different xx

Had it last year with DS, no problems, will be due it again in February with #2.

I had it last time, no side effects, not even a sore arm x

I dont like needles either i have a big fear of them but i always have all the injections i`am offered & ive never had any reaction at all, If anything happened to my baby & it was something that i could have prevented i would never forgive myself, Baby comes first X

Had mine this am with flu jab in other arm. Im fine. X

A woman I know on Facebook mentioned she didn’t get it done and how she regrets it as her little one is really ill and has to use a machine to support her breathing. She’s been ill for 5 months now poor thing

Lander the guidelines have changed and they now recommend it between 16-32 weeks (like you I assumed I'd need it later?)

Had both of mine yesterday and the whooping cough was def the more painful..... After not at the time!!!

Have 2 dead arms today.

I've had both jabs in both previous pregnancies as well with no I'll effects other than sore arms.

X

I hate injections and blood tests and I have had my fair share both during pregnancy, labour and post labour!
But the whooping cough was super quick, the injection itself was relatively painless as it's a very small needle, and I had no symptoms afterwards besides a slightly sore arm for a day or too.
I didn't even faint it was that quick!

If you let the nurse etc know you're needle phobic before she does it, they'll take care of you and let you lie down afterwards hopefully. Take a lucozade sport and chocolate bar for some sugar afterwards to help you feel a little better, and make sure you eat beforehand. Helps both with the nerves and any anxiety-related symptoms after.

I’m not great with needles and got mine done yesterday. Wasn’t painful getting it done but my arm feels sore today but just like I’ve overdone it at the gym type pain x
