Hi everyone,

Have my scan booked for 20th october as recently been told I may have pcos.
Does it hurt? also will they tell you stuff at the scan or do they just send results to the doctor? x

Hey, I went for an external scan a few months ago.

Before I went for the scan, I actually called the hospital to find out whether it was an external or internal scan. They told me they don't really perform internal ones that much any more. So I went, ready for an external scan.... Had to drink plenty of water beforehand, and was bursting during the scan! The sonographer couldn't see anything. She then asked me if I was alright with her performing an internal scan. I was fine with it, but it was a bit awkward haha, as I wasn't really mentally prepared for it. She told me I had A LOT of cysts, but she did not show me the image - and I didn't ask to see it either, was a bit distraught about being poked where I shouldn't have been. The results were then sent to my GP.

That was about it. Don't worry about it. It doesn't hurt.... That gel they put on you is a tad cold, but that's all. Don't be afraid to ask questions, if you have any.

Good luck!

Hello :)
I've had several ovary scans. I had the first one as they suspected I had pcos. It was an external scan of the ovaries and the kidneys and then I had an internal one too. The worst bit for me was having a full bladder for the external scan, they were late with my appointment and I was bursting for a pee. When she said I could go before doing the internal it was such a relief! The internal was ok, bit cold and was slightly uncomfortable when they were moving the probe about. She showed me some pictures afterwards and pointed out the cysts to me.

Afterwards I had to go back to my doctor (who basically said the same as the scan lady had told me) and she then referred us to the fertility clinic. After our first app there I had to have the ultrasound scans redone with a 'more qualified' person. It was basically the same (he only did an internal) but took loads of measurements and recorded all the sizes of my ovaries and uterus. I didn't get to see anything that time but he did talk to me about it afterwards and said everything looked great (apart from the pcos!).

Thank you ladies. It says on letter I have to have an external and internal, says to have a full bladder. I remember at EPU I thought I had to have a full bladder, but got into room and she could not see anything externally so told me to empty my bladder, I guess the internal will be the same as the one I had at epu?

I am hoping they will tell me how bad it potentially could be while I am at scan, rather than leaving me guessing.

Did you ladies get put on metformin or anything? xx

Yes it will be the same. I also had an internal with my mc.

My consultant won't let me try metformin, he said it was old fashioned but I'm debating taking this up with my gp as lots of people seem to have had success with it. I had blood tests that didn't show any issues with insulin so I don't know if this is why it isn't suitable for me. I've got to go back in Feb to try clomid, at the moment we aren't on any treatment and no help has been offered. I think it is all pretty poor really. I was told diet would be an issue so had to do a months food diary for them to see, however after they had it I was told it was fine! Annoyed as I hoped that would be my problem and then it would have been easy ish to change. Low gi is good for pcos and I try to do that, might be worth you looking into?

Well first thing my gp mentioned when I went for my blood results was metformin. It seems drs have mixed reviews about it? Yeah I have heard that about GI diet, but when i looked at low GI foods, my diet at the moment is not too bad. x

I can't help you with the scan info but I was prescribed metformin for PCOS whilst TTC. It didn't work for me but alot of women I was talking to on a forum said it had worked and then fell pregnant whilst taking it! One doctor told me it was a like a placebo drug and doesn't work for PCOS (what??) Others have asked if its for diabetes :/ My doc purely prescribed to help us conceive x

I had an external and internal scan.....

Had a really full bladder for external (wad nearly crying in waiting room and had bit of panic attack as thought I was gonna wet myself)...I was allowed to empty my bladder for the internal thank goodness! Xx

I have mild pcos and my best friend has quite bad case of it. She had metformin and clomid and fell pregnant after first month :) before that she was going up to 3-4 months without a period sometimes longer xx

I have pcos (didn't get any periods at all naturally) and wasn't offered metformin but I did conceive on clomid. Don't worry about the scan, I had a lot of the internal ones during diagnosis and treatment. They're not very dignified and slightly uncomfortable but not as bad as a smear for example. Good luck xx
