Hi ladies, after my GP cancelling on me yesterday, I'm having to wait an extra week to be seen - would have been tomorrow but I need the 30 minute slot and they only had 10! :brat:

I was wondering if anyone on here could tell me their experience with PCOS, how they got diagnosed, what their cycles are/were like etc. I have a niggly feeling this is what I have but it's not been confirmed yet.

Also, how is it being treated? Metformin/Clomid?

I know a few ladies on here with PCOS have babies or are pregnant so I know it's not impossible.

Just wanted to do a bit of research. :)

missjuly pms me your email, i will sent you some information

Can you PM it to me hun? I've been reading loads this morning as well. x

I have it. Came off the pill in January 2010 and didnt have a period at all for nearly a year. Went to gp in June, bloods were done in August and these showed I was low in prolactin. Referred to a specialist and got an appointment in November - whereby had an internal scan and the cysts were found. Due to that I was not ovulating at all they decided best course of action was ovarian drilling which was done on 13 December. I got pregnant shortly after but lost the baby at 6 weeks. Waited 41 days for a period after that. In the meantime i had been prescribed metformin because they thought that cysts may be re-forming and preventing ovulation - however turns out it was actually ovulation then pregnancy as I Then got pregnant again with pea on the next cycle :) - good luck!
Ps I've been told if I want any more after pea it'll prob be a clomid job x

Thanks Jayne. :)

I've no idea what they'll offer me, providing it's PCOS in the first place. Sort of hope it is so that we can get started with treatment! x

I was diagnosed in Dec 08 with PCO after bloods and scan. I had never had a normal cycle, having 2 periods a year if I was lucky. Started metformin in July 09. Had laperoscopy/dye, hysteroscopy and ovarian drilling in nov 09. My consultant also diagnosed sacculated tubes after this op. He told me he had to wait a year after this op to move me onto the next level of treatment. It did give me a more regular cycle, but anywhere frlm 30-50 days. Stopped metformin in july 10 as it was not doing anything for me. In oct 10, I was told I would not conceive naturally and would need clomid/IVF. Then had a hycosy scan in Dec 10. In march 11, was told at my next appt we would get clomid or ivf, depending on dh's swimmers. On the date of our next appt, we had a scan that showed I was 8 weeks pregnant. We had, despite what we had been told, conceived naturally.

Copied and pasted my comment to someone else...

Hi hun. First things first PCOS is very common so you are not alone! 1 in 5 have Polycystic ovaries. 1 in 10 have polycystic ovary syndrome. Most famous person I know to have it is Posh Victoria Beckham.) Doesn't feel like much of a comforter, I know. I got diagnosed in November last year with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome after years of suspecting I had it. Once I had it confirmed, yes it sucked but it was also a relief cos there was a diagnosis!

I got put on Metformin which I started taking in January this year. Along with changing my diet and increasing my exercise habits, the Metformin heled me lose a stone and a half. Thus in turn restarting my periods (after 7 months of nothing!). In May this year I fell pregnant.

When I was put on Metformin, the dose started at 1 x 500mg tablet a day. They next week it upped to 2 x 500mg a day. Then finally upped to 3 x 500mg a day the week after. It stayed at this level from then on. Unfortunately there were bad side effects which included a dodgy tummy. Normally happened when I first started taking it and each time I upped the dose. But benefits out weighed the cons!

A book I definitely recommend is this one:

I hope things get sorted for you! I hope this info helps.xx

Got told it would take 6 months to a year to conceive. Hubby caught me on first attempt. LOL. If you need any thing, just drop me a pm.xx

Thanks everyone. :) x x

I had an appointment yesterday that we almost forgot about and the GP was fab, she was really shocked at how we'd been treated in my last practice and she has booked me in for bloods to check for PCOS which are being done next week. :)

I will have a longer appointment after that to discuss my blood results and where we go next, the GP is also interested in how TTC has been for us so our next appointent will be all about the OPKs, faint lines on tests, mid cycle spotting and cramping.... etc etc etc!!

Can't wait! We're finally moving! :yay:

Glad to hear things are moving forward for you Miss J. xx

Just to let you know re bloods though, all mine showed up normal bar a slightly low prolactin level. The consultant said at my appointment that the prolactin was nothing to do with the pcos, so it didn't show in my bloods at all really. I don't have the actual syndrome, just the cysts - just to let you know it may not be obvious in bloods - a scan only revealed mine x
