As above what food are you taking in your hospital bag?? We got told to pack some goodies in case its the middle of the night when you go into labour and nothing will be open.

Me and the hubby went to get ours on Friday and we ended up just buying crap like chocolate raisons, chocolate rolls, galaxy ripples, cereal bars like trackers etc. We also bought a 6 pack :) of Locazade and 4 bottles of coke plus some lucozade tablets. OMG didnt realise how much we had that will last forevefr ha ha

I've got kellogs oven bake bars and some go ahead fruit cake bars, i've only packed for me as my mum just said her and Dave can get food whenever they need it, the delivery suite also provides food (when i was there before they practically forced an, actually quite nice, sandwich down my throat)

Theres vending machines in the hospital and a supermarket 5 minutes up the road so i'm thinking we'll be ok with only a tiny bit of food.

I was thinking about packing some milkyway bars as well but they'd melt, i figured i'd jsut want quick energy rather then anything good for me or substantial

I didn't even think about taking food. I never took any last time either. All I had was some boiled sweets to suck on which I got from the hospital shop.

I've got short bread biscuits on my list and a couple of cans of coke. I don't want anyhting that will dehydrate me.

OMG shortbread!!! I absolutely LOVE that stuff atm!!! I might make a trip to tesco for some later!!

AND i love coke too but i'm not good with it when its fizzy  i'd have to leave it to flatten a little first lol

Personally I wouldn't bother with the fizzy drinks at all. I had lucozade with me and didn't touch it. They don't quench your thirst fast enough and the thought of drinking it lukewarm put me off drinking it in labour. Water, water and more water! Drinking stuff with bubbles and ending up windy and in labour would also be very uncomfy!

I took cereal bars and demolished them, as well as some fruit. We definitely didn't bring enough for OH - because he was with me overnight he couldn't leave the ward. Thankfully I got some sandwiches I didn't want as an evening snack so I gave them to him.

ooooooh! good thread!! i may well steal ideas from the rest o you hehehe!

i was just thinking about taking junk food basically! lucozade, crisps, choc! mmmm cereal bars are a brill idea! theres a 24hr tesco down the road, so ill be able to order my OH down there hopefully!! xxxxx

Our hospital has a policy of no food for a women in labour once you go in, as for waht OH wants, that's his problem, i'm going to have enough on my mind.

I know what you mean about warm drinks but luckily I got a cooler bag opicnic thing so I am hoping to but them in there with ice cubes in these plastic bag things that you can buy so hopefully thats should keep them coolish!!!:)

Its wierd how different hospitals have different policies, our midwife actually recommended we eat during labour for energy. I know you're hospital are only doing it in case of complications (you're not really meant to eat before having a general) i really so wish they'd make a universal policy for these labour wards

I made sandwiches every night and put them in the firdge incase I went into labour, and if not we just had them for our lunch :D

We also had fruit and cereal bars. Brian had some crisps and juice

Im not gonna bother takin food. I think il be too nervous to eat anything at all and if OH feels like anything or i do we can go to the shop in the hosp or a vending machine xx

I didn't think it was advised that you eat once your in labour, because if you suddenly needed a section in an emergency and had to have a GA you could aspirate.

I know the chances are small but I don't think I'll be taking the risk

Warrington hossie - pack LOADS of FOOD!!!! I got there 8.30am tuesday and the only meal I got was breakfast wednesday morning. They did come and ask me wednesday lunch if I wanted something, I asked for a sandwich, they left me egg butties :puke: :puke: :puke: Thats the ONLY flavour I wont touch lol!
I lived on 2 apples I'd packed, oh and they left me 2 packs of biscuts and a genoa cake - I'm diabetic :rotfl:

I was thinking:

Plain digestives
Large bottles of water
Bottle of squash (lemon)
Flapjacks
banannas
Plain popcorn
Boiled sweeties
Croissants

Unsure what else, I dont want to take anything too sugary as im worried it might make me feel ill.,..

Failing the above a big fat curry

Most places will allow you to eat during labour - you need as much energy as possible to push a baby out after sometimes days of early labour. I ate (was advised to!), though not very much, during labour and had to have a GA for removal of a retained placenta an hour after she was born. They asked me what I'd eaten and just told me to swallow as I was drifting off to sleep. Still here to tell the tale!

If you feel you can eat a little and are allowed to, I would, because you really will need every ounce of energy you can muster! Naturally you should do what you're comfortable with but don't feel you can't eat anything "just in case".

I think I went through about 8 sports bottles of lucozade and a sandwich...

(Labour was 11 hours from start of induction to birth)

You really don't think much about food, more about drink!

Oh, and the sports bottles are best because it's easy to get the drink then. You really won't be in the mood to make drinks up and sip them out of a cup trust me!

Oh I hadn't even thought about food!! I'll probably pack some sandwiches, cocktail sausages (love them!), crisps, grapes, chocolate (and LOTS of it!)

How are you anyway Sarah? Enjoying your maternity leave or reeeeeally bored?! xx

Hi sorry gate crashing again...

I was told that for drinks apple juice is good for you but not orange juice not quite sure the reason but I downed about 4x 1ltr cartons of the stuff and i was also in a birthing pool so you need to keep fluids up whilst in there.. again dont ask me i was high on Gas and Air.

Food I think i had toast with Marmalade until in last stages of labour when it was just plain water.

Just to warn you ladies if you have an epidural you may get side effects of the :puke: kind afterwards due to the anisthetic (sorry hope you catch my drift).. it did me so please be prepared for it.

I went into hospital at 7.30am on the 1st of March and gave birth finally at 5.13am on the 2nd of March so I was going for a while, but pains started at 4.30pm on the 28th of February.

Take care all and see you officially on Thursday :cheer:

Ooooh that's a good point! If my labour is anything like I think it'll be, I'll be having an epi as soon as I arrive on the ward :rotfl:
