What does your new baby do in the daytime?

I think I may have identified a problem.

Basically When Maia is awake, she cries. She's only not crying when shes asleep. I've only just realised this!

So surely babies are capable of being awake but not crying? I was wondering what all the other babies are like?

I want Maia to be awake a little more in the daytime, in the hope that she stays asleep at night!

How do you entertain a new born anyway? :?

Freya has only just become more alert, we have short periods of about 15 minuites three times a day when i lay her on her mat or she goes in the bouncy chair, its changing every day though. Every baby is different though, are u breast feeding or bottle? I do feel like I spend a long time feeding.

I am breast feeding, but also topping up with formula as she has a bottomless pit for an appetite.

i do wonder if she has a bit of reflux as she spits up more after bf than bottle?

So should I not expect her to be awake in the daytime? Only a book I'm reading says they should be awake 8 hours between 7am and 7pm?

:?

Eight hours is a lot, I would say Freya is awake for half that time! There isn't a lot you xan do to entertain newborn, I tlk to her, sing her songs, and she sits in her bouncer with the activity arch, but she is too young to pay much attention really ( sorry for typos, can only tye with one hand as am feeding!) Have noticed how much more alert she is today in comparison with yesterday even.

Tilly is only awake for probably 2/3 hours in the day other than feeding, unless she decides to have a screaming fit. She is slowly getting more alert and follows her Dad around with her eyes now. you cant really 'amuse' a newborn as they have hardly any attention span.

seemingly sleep breeds sleep so you should probably let her sleep during the day if thats what she wants to do. Thomas is still grizzly during the day and I am beginning to wonder whether there is a reason for it as apparantly at his age he should be crying less (might post about it actually - thanks for reminding me)

At around 2-3 weeks Thomas was either sleeping or crying but as the weeks go on they do start spending more time awake and content, have you got a gym, Thomas likes to be kicking around on his and then falls asleep on it - as he has just done now!

If she is crying constantly she might have colic. Try infacol it worked for Jake and it won't do any harm if it isn't colic.

Thats exactly what I thought!

She is on Infacol at the moment. Seems to help a bit!

When Dylan was maia's age he was still suffering Jaundice so was very sleepy and generally had to be woken for feeds.

Now he is awake more the first thing he liked was lights he loves watching tv , i try him wiht his toys every few days but he has little intrest so i just sing rock him and generally play with him till he is completely fed up of me and falls asleep.

Guessing the book you are reasing is Gina ford ..who doesn't seem to recognise all babies are different. Dylan would be so very misearble if i tried to keep him awake 8hours out of 12

Ryan just sleeps, wakes up and has a little whinge when he wants his bottle then depending entirely on his mood he either falls straight back asleep or stays awake for an hour or so.

When he's awake he just looks about, he's so alert but nobody believes me cos other people usually only see him when he's asleep

My little boy when he is awake and not crying looks around calmly and sometimes makes funny noises and smiles and laughs. He's a real pleasure when he is calm but he can have his real crying fits and he's a little horror at trying to get him to sleep early (he is awake till really late).

When dylan is awake he squirms to wake up,then ussually makes noises to make sure people know he's there.
He's strangely alert for his age.He likes to watch the cat,it makes him laugh.

Eight hours is a lot i thought too.
I dont think it matters too much if they sleep a lot during the day as long as they are sleeping at night but itthey wake more at night then I think you need to look at the routine.

I swear by a routine, i think I would collapse without one.

Isaac spends a lot of the daytime awake, once the sun is up he wants to be up too, and he loves to play, and his new found interest is the TV remote  He also loves his Nemo cushion, Huggies nappies packet and the dog, and us sometimes too
