My husband and I met online and didn't meet in person until three years later. He is from Australia and I am American. He moved to the UK in 2002 and came to the US for 3 months before his job started, at the end of which we got engaged. He went back to London and we were engaged for almost two years before I was able to move over here to be with him. We've been happily married now for almost 5 years. It CAN work. 
I had two long distance relationships before him that did not work out (I'm a glutton for punishment, apparently) - one guy lived in Germany and was a jerk, one guy lived in Seattle and let his parents get in the way. These relationships would have failed even if the guy had lived in the same area as me anyway, so I think it definitely has a lot to do with the people involved.
