Been following Pumpkin's thread on toddler talking but didn't want to gatecrash.

When did your LO start walking and/or talking? Ds is 13 months and he will stand up furniture walk, he will walk from one end of the room if you hold one of his hands but he won't walk independently. He will babble to himself and copy sounds but won't associate sounds to things like mama or dada. I'm just wondering when it'll all come, I've heard that they either walk or talk but he's doing neither!

Am I expecting too much from him at this age?

Yup - was mama and dada and that's it at 13 months! Started walking without help at 14 months and words coming in at 15/16 months

Thank you.

I've just had a quick Google, as you do, and something really interesting popped up. He's currently being raised bilingual - he has English at home, French with his Granny and we are looking at the possibility of introducing Irish too.

Dr Google has said that children with 2 or more languages tend to start speaking later than those with 1 language. I'm not sure of the reason but can anyone confirm or refute this?

Mine walked more confidently just before he was 14 months old. Talking i'm not so sure... he was definitely doing lots of talking by 18 months. He is a right chatterbox at 2.8 years old and has been for a long long time.

Daughter - first word approx. 7 months, first independent steps 19 months
Son - first word approx. 13 months, first independent steps 17.5 months

As for being raised bilingual - I know a colleague of mine was raising her son bilingual and his speech was very slow to come through, so perhaps. Makes sense if you think about it as they're having to process two different languages and know which words belong to which language.

Your LO sounds like he's doing fine! xx

Hey, so thomas walked independently from 14 months (all started when he started holding things in one hand and still wanted to hold onto something with the other, replaced the walker/ hand with a toy and he started walking on his own!!)
He'd been cruising round furniture for several months prior.

In terms of talking he says about 4/5 words for definite right now and that's it, he's currently 17months. I know he understands a lot more as if I ask him to do something he can do it or he can point to things.

Thanks ladies. I'm just gonna monitor it and see how we go, I'm probably over worrying!

Yea bi lingual does take longer for them to take in. That's probably what it is :) he's got to try and learn 2

Does granny see him a lot?

As I said on pumpkins thread, my eldest talked before he walked. I honestly can't remember a time when he didn't talk, but I know he was definitely talking before walking! He only started crawling when he was a year old and showed no interest in standing up never mind walking until he was 18 months. Now he's two he's always running around and always talking away. I miss the days when he just sat there quietly!

I posted on pumpkins thread too but DD walked confidently at 11 months, and is now saying a few words at 14 months...maybe 15 words plus animal noises. She isn't interested in joining words together though. They are all do different, my friends daughter walked at 8 months! Xx

Mummybexee, he goes to hers every Sunday for the day and occasionally overnight on a Saturday. She only speaks to him in French, the only English he will hear from her is when others are around. It's quite frequent really.

Littlemonkey, this is what concerns me - he's showing no interest in either but he doee babble, crawl and furniture walk and has done from about 9 months. He understands what we say to him too but has no interest in saying any coherant words back. Don't know what to make of it.

A friend was told that bilingual children take longer as they have to process the word in both languages, as her boy got older, he started to get very frustrated at school which was very unlike him, again the doctors advised this was because it was taking him longer to process words and sentences, and longer to process a reply. My niece and nephew are both bilingual and at 3 and 6 are fluent and happy in both, the 6 year old also translates for her brother if he replies in polish to a question.

Really are amazing being bilingual at such a young age.
Sorry for the ramble, but I guess trying to say not to worry too much

O started walking on his own at just over a year, had been holding on to furniture for a bit before that and then just got up one day and did it. He wants to walk everywhere now (15mths) and goes nuts when I put him in the pram (needs must atm as I'm 33 weeks with twins).
Speech wise he has quite a few words (ta, dada, mama, gandad, nanan, look) and has just started to put some together, wazzat? - what's that? And izit? - what is it? He's said these for a few weeks now but nothing new for what seems a while.
Awkwardly "izit?" sounds like "shit" sometimes. X

Omg gillyboos, that's hilarious!

Thanks ladies, hopefully he'll start doing one of them soon! I think he's just wary of walking on his own and just needs more confidence. Funily enough though, he will get his dinosaur teddies and go raaaawr at them, doesn't do it with any other toys. Does raawwr count as a word?!

I can also confirm the bilingual theory. Have done a fair bit of research on this as this is how we are bringing up our little man.

B said his first word at 7 months but didn't "talk" till recently (just turned 3) with help of speech therapy. My husband is bilingual but only speaks English with B. Speech therapist confirmed that children who are brought up bilingual do tend to have delayed speech.
He was an early walker though, 6 months with a push along toy, in dependant steps at 10.5 months and full on running by a year!

My lo is 17 months. He was commando crawling 6 mths, full crawling by 7, stood up at 8, walking with furniture at 9 but didn't walk unaided until 14/15month. He babbles but only really says dad, mama & gone occasionally sit and down (separately) when he hears us say it to the dog

Aaaahh this is fab, thanks all! Glad the bilingual theory is true, feel a bit better for it now. It's frustrating because you try not to compare children as they all go at their own pace but you can't help over-evaluating everything. Or I do anyway!

My little girl is 16 months in a couple of weeks and has just started properly walking. She had been building up to it for a while but only recently walks the whole length of a room & can stand herself back up again from the floor with nothing to pull on. It seems to be making her very tired (and therefore grumpy from about 5pm though!)

As for words, I would say here is mainly babble too - we get mama, dada, nana, wow, oooh... But I'm not sure if she comprehends the meaning or is just saying it cos she can! I wouldn't worry about it too much but I know what you mean about comparing, it's very difficult to avoid! X

Thanks glitter!

We had two very tentative independent steps today which I bawled at. I was hoping he'd be on his feet before baby came along but it's not really a big deal that he's not. He's progressing which is the main thing!
