Hi ladies,

I'm 26w with my second baby and I'm going for a VBAC this time, as I had an emergency c section with my son.

I'd ideally like to avoid another c-sec but I was told today that I won't be allowed to go overdue by more than a few days, so if baby is not here on time its likely I will be booked in for a planned section. The midwife was quite matter of fact about it, and I stupidly didn't really question it, but now I wonder if this is normal or specifically at my hospital?

My ds was 1 week late so I expect this one to be late too, and I'd rather at least go a week before considering any intervention.

Ok I'm rambling now! Can anyone share their experience of VBAC? What were you told and what actually happened? I just want to know if its worth me arguing my wishes or if that's just standard practice.

Thanks in a advance xxxxx

I'm currently 39 weeks and trying for a vbac. I'm booked in for a section at 42 weeks if I haven't gone naturally by then. I'm booked for a sweep tomorrow to give me the best chance of a natural. I'd definitely question how long they are willing to let you go before intervening. Have you seen a consultant?

I'd question it.

I wanted a VBAC with my second child but didn't want to be induced, so I said I would try for a VBAC if I went in to labour naturally. I hadn't gone in to labour by 42 weeks and my blood pressure was going up a little so I opted for another C-section (which was wonderful in comparison to the emergency section with number 1).

At the end of the day, they cannot force you to be induced or have a section at 41 weeks. If you are still feeling fit and fine you could request that they monitor baby a bit closer and maybe give you a scan to check on amniotic fluid levels. But my midwife only said those type of things were a concern going over 42 weeks, nothing was said about 41 weeks.

Hope you get the birth you want!

You can go 2 weeks overdue before an intervention. A normal full term singleton gestation is 37-42 weeks so I'd fight my corner on that. Every woman and pregnancy is different so it is ridiculous to have a blanket 'overdue' date. Plus, why a planned c-section? You've only had one previous c-section and even if you were to go dangerously past the 42 week mark you have the option to be induced.

If your showing good signs of being close to labour I'd go with VBAC, this time for me I still ended up having an emergence section but for different reasons to last time.

I was pleased that having just the pessary I got to 8-9cm dilated before the section and they say 75% are successful labours so if you for want section you could opt to be induced around due date instead?

Good luck xx

I am also trying for a VBAC after my emergency CS but I was told categorically that they will not induce me as it would put too much pressure on the wound and they won't let me go over by much either. They didn't specify how long I can go over, I think they will assess the situation when it is relevant.

I hope it will go very well for you but I would let the professionals make the call as they have seen it all and wouldn't recommend another CS unless it was necessary

Thanks ladies!

I think I'd like to wait at least a week before opting for a planned c section. I'm more miffed because they haven't really explained all the risks specific to me and what they are most concerned about this time. I think that's why I feel Like I'm being brushed off. Will try and get an appt with the consultant around 34ish weeks as take it from there

Xxxxx

I had a c-section with my son and went on to thankfully have a successful vbac. My EDD was 26th July and they were going to let me go until 5th August before they were considering another c-section, but I went on my own on 20th July. I really didn't want a c-section so I'm really thankful that my vbac was a success, however during labour I was begging for one

I hope that I will have a vbac this time too but ya just never know what happens. I don't know what way it'll work this time seeing as my c-section was followed by a vbac though...I may not even be offered a c-section this time. x
