Update- I have a happy baby!!!

Seen the doctor and he was great. He thinks that the bacteria in her gut has been wrecked by the massive antibiotic shot I had in theatre when I was having my repair job done. He says he sees it a lot and he is a very experienced doctor who also teaches medical students. He said its either that or she's just being a little monkey!!
I was also shocked because he advised me to stop breastfeeding and keep her on one type of food rather than mixing it up. He said as she was happy on the lactose free milk to continue with that and to call him in a week to see how things are going. He said that the best bit of breastfeeding is the colostrum anyway and not to feel like a failure not doing it. I think because of my mental state and the fact I have to go back to work in three weeks he thinks it's best for my mental health too! I'm a bit gutted about it but I have to be realistic.
I'm pleased to report that Mia is thriving and has gained 6oz since her 5 day old check. She's now 14 days old so he said that indicates there's nothing seriously wrong with her. He also advised that if we've done everything for her and she still screams to walk away for a little while as babies can be manipulative things to get your constant attention. And we do just cuddle her and try to soothe her every time she cries.
I hope no one thinks any less of me for stopping breastfeeding. Believe me it's what I wanted to do but for the sake of my relationship with my baby I think it's for the best. X

I am the last one out my NCT group to BF and I combi fed from 7 weeks. I am just very stubborn and always offered breast first and at night I breastfed too

thats exactly what i did, always offered boob, even if she only took a tiny bit or if shed only fed half an hour before

That's really interesting that you say that about the antibiotic you had in theatre wrecking their bacteria.

I had one also when I was in theatre and had my suspicions that it had done the same to Toby as every time he takes my milk as soon as it hits his stomach it gurgles and he shrieks and writhes in pain.

I top him up on cow and gate comfort milk as my milk supply is really low, it only has 40% lactose compared with other formulas.

Another thing I've found thats really helped is cranial osteopathy, Toby has had about 8 treatments and he seems to be settling down. He doesn't have the same refluxy symptoms he had before, he's also happier to be laid down whereas before he'd scream.

I'm struggling expressing all hours combined with no sleep and a still unsettled baby so I'd be interested to hear how you get on.
Xxx

noone will blame you for stopping bf, it can be stressful and you are going back to work soon. you tried it and you gave her that first colostrum feed so in my books you have done everything needed to give her a great start. do whatever is best for you and baby.

Toby sounds exactly like Mia!!! She would scream out in pain every time I laid her back and through feeding. She would feed for a while scream, feed a bit more and so it went on.
I'm really cross they don't warn you about it and its so distressing.
Since I've stopped giving her my milk she seems to enjoy her food and she is a lot easier to get wind out of. Before she would scream every time a poo made its way out and you could hear her tummy bubbling.
I really want to continue giving her my milk but weirdly it doesn't seem to agree with her. She is much more content on formula as she is a very hungry baby. She can't get it in quick enough!!
I feel like we are enjoying each other so much more.
Have you spoken to your doctor about it? Mine was so helpful and reassuring x

Also just to add we have had much less screaming fits. Her worst time is her 2am feed but we put her in the other room and let her cry for a while last night and after about 5 minutes she was asleep! I hated doing it but sometimes when you've done everything you can and it's driving you mental that's the only thing left to do.
Good luck firstbaby, if you want a sympathetic ear anytime pm me, I know exactly what you're going through. I've found it incredibly tough xx
