I'm really excited because DH and I have decided to get a kitten. I know everyone is going to say it's a substitute for a baby but I don't care, it slightly is. We've always wanted one but have been renting. Now we are buying our own place we can get one :cheer:

It really has shifted my focus, we are looking for a British Short hair blue and it means I'm spending my time thinking about that rather than ttc. :D

feefee fell pregnant they day she got her new puppy ( thought no baby was on horizon kinda thing)

maybe new kitten will do same for you !

im not very into different cat breeds ( always had dogs) , have you got a piccy of what your looking for ? sounds lovely ( being blue)

That will be really cute and hopefully the hours of entertainment will keep your mind off things

Hey congratulations :cheer: I hope you find one soon :D

I wish I could get another dog but OH won't let me :(

Hey Becs -

Congrats on your decision to get a cat. Just a word of warning. While TTC and/or pregnant you should have nothing to do with cleaning the kitten's messes or changing his tray. OH gets to do that for at least the next year! The reason is that cats can carry something called toxoplasmosis which is very dangerous in pregnancy and is passed on through their droppings.

Toxoplasmosis is found in raw meat and unwashed raw veg, so if your cat digs around in the soil or is fed raw meat he is more at risk. If you have had the cat for a long time the chances are that you have already picked up toxoplasmosis and gotten over it as it doesn't really have any symptoms apparently. Scary eh?

But I have to tell you - we have a long haired tom cat. He is the soul of gentleness around Naomi and we love him to bits. She does too, she gets all excited when he comes in.

Best of luck with your pet!

Sue

G3M it's the same as the grey cat in the sheba adverts :D Sooooo cute.

Tiny Sue, thanks for the word of warning, I did read something about that. It sounds quite dodgey, I'll mention it to DH and maybe we should re-consider. I'll look into it.

Thanks
Becs

aslong as he clears up the tray and any mishaps u should be fine , or get a big thick pair of rubber gloves

Tiny Sue,

I grew up with cats but haven't had one for about 10 years, is there any chance I am immune now?

B

I don't know about immunity, but you will be fine as long as you don't touch the cats paws after he's been in the garden - and wear thick gloves when changing the litter tray!

All pregnant women should wear thick gloves when doing the gardening as well so you wouldn't be at a huge extra risk - just be careful

Don't worry too much about the toxoplasma thing- just wear a pair of disposable glvoes when handling the tray etc or just wash your hands well afterwards.

Thanks girls, I was getting quite nervous, but I think we'll just go ahead and I'll be very vigilant!!

:D

Oh hunny I didn't mean to sound like doom and gloom. I was just reiterating what I was told. We had two cats - indoor cats - while pregnant with Naomi. The doc said...cats in house fine. Just don't have them in the same bed with you or on the baby's bedding, and don't change the cat litter tray. Rubber gloves or not, that stuff stinks and if you are suffering from morning sickness it's the last thing you'll want to do!

Please do go ahead and get the cat. They are brilliant pets and our guy in particular is very affectionate. He even plays with Naomi now!

Sue
