Does anyone here have an elevated TSH level? If so, do you know what it is and did they decide to treat you for it? I was told mine was elevated yesterday (after telling them this since the very beginning) and they don't seem to want to treat me for it... I don't really trust the decision, though, and hypothyroidism can lead to cretenism in babies!

I'm on thyroxine for hypothyroidism, have been for 9 years.

Why did you have your TSH checked? It's not normally done unless you have hypothyroidism or are showing symptoms of it.

Well controlled, it causes no problems whatsoever. It's if you had it for a long time and it went untreated that can sometimes cause problems.

I got mine checked because it was a little out of the normal range before I was pregnant, which I found out because I was showing symptoms of hypothyroidism. I was due to get it re-checked to decide what dose of medication to get when I found out I was pregnant, so they decided to wait until my 20 week appointment (I have no idea why they decided this) to check it again. The results never came back, so they checked again at 28... Again, they never came back. These are the first results I got back. I got to speak to the midwife, though, and she is going to check with the consultant to see what the implications are. I can't help but worry, but I'm trying to be optimistic! I have to wait until at least tomorrow to find out because today is a bank holiday.

If they were only a little out then don't worry. You would have had to have had it left untreated for a considerable amount of time for it to cause problems. Pregnancy can cause your levels to be messed up too. I've had my thyroxine increased from 200mcg to 300mcg and as soon as I've delivered I've to drop back down to 200mcg.

And, your levels can't have been bad if you conceived. Uncontrolled hypothyroidism stops you ovulating. Mine was badly controlled for years which is probably why it took us 5 years!

:D

Thanks. I was thinking about the fact that I was able to become pregnant... But I have read conflicting opinions about what is an acceptable level to go untreated. I guess all I can do is wait! I really hope to go on thyoxine after, though... Easy weight loss! :D Haha... Seriously, though, I do feel the affect of it and it would be nice to be back to normal.
