the smear thread #2

you should start having smear tests when you are sexually active. it is really important.

I'm due one as well so will be phoning my doctors today to make the appointment. I have to have one done every year as a few years ago they found abnormal cells and I had to have a biopsy done which thankfully was clear. Since then have never missed one

just to let you know girls they have now changed how they do them they used to do it with a stick like thing and smear the cells on a slide and it was uncomfy, but they now do it with like a honey comb on the end of a little stick and it is so much better,i had mine done last year and didnt feel a thing so dont worry girls :D

The doctor wanted to do one at my 6 week cheack with Olivia, but my AF was here :D

The nurse then advised me to maked one when Olivia was 3 months, she didn't advies doing one at postnatal cheak as a lot of them come back with abnormailities (sp) but turn out to be nothing, she did say why it happens but i cant remember!

Olivia is 6 months now and i haven't been, to be honest i had forgotten about it

Im not in a rush to go tho!

My last and only one was 3 years ago , i had it on my 21st birthday :(

I did my duty and had my routine one about 6 months ago, then the midwife informed me I'd have to have another after the baby :( Thought I'd got away with it for another 3 years.

It doesn't hurt a bit, it's just a bit uncomfy and embarrasing. I always book in with the female nurse, but last time there was a young trainee male Dr but i thought stuff it, when I give birth everyone's going to see everything anyway so knock yourself out

Now they use a plastic thingy to open you up instead of the cold metal one they used to use and they just put a thin swab thing in you and turn it around.
Then they jab the swab into a little plastic tub with liquid and apparently it leaves your cells in the liquid for them to check..technology eh

Remember what Budge said girls "It saves lives".

I've only ever had one

It hurt like hell :? I don't want to go back but I know I should.

I've had them every 6 months since i was 21 (except when i've been preggers) - they come back with pre-cancerous cells every time but never abnormal enough to warrant treatment. I know that being tested so often means they'll catch it at the earliest possible stage when they do change - it really can save your life.

Stop burying your heads in the sand girls - far better to get checked out and find out about it sooner rather than later. Oh, and now I've got my mum head on, I hope you all do regular breast checks

im 21 and have never had one. when i fist got preg at 19 i was told i would have one after baby was born then i was told after my 2nd baby then i was told once i am 25

Don't worry, they are not really bad. A little cold and a little uncomfortable for a VERY short time. It is well worth it.
I also read the Take A Break story (the shame....but I LOVE Top Tips!!! :D) and it reminded me to get mine sorted for this year.

hello ladies, I am due one but have to wait until Sammy is out.

I have to have them yearly now, used to be 6 months.

I just want to stress the importance of them to you...

I'm now 28 and have been having clear smears for the last 2 years.

however, i always used to go along..reluctantly may I add and when I was 24 abnormal cells were picked up which on my next visit had escalated.

At 25 I had 2 biopsies named colcoscopies which found that I had pre cancerous cells.

I had these removed with laser treatment within the following week and was told that had I have left them undetected, I could have had cervical cancer by the time I was 30.

not trying to say this to scare any of you, the odds are low but just to say that the few minutes of discomfort are well worth it.

By the time I got to the laser removal, I will not lie, it was excrutiation , but God I'm glad I did it.

So Budge, I'll be joining you after just have to put it on hold until Sammy is here

They didn't do one when i had brooke because i was 17, and was told i would get recalled between my 21st and 25th birthday just my luck to get recalled on my 21st birthday!

I must admit it wasn't that bad when i had it done!

How have you lot got away with this for so long?? My doctor did one routinely at my 6 week checkup. I hate them so am pretty crap at making appointments but I know they do save lives.

Good luck to you all. I vow to be better at getting them regularly once I've had this little bean

as said in the poor girls thread

i too am one of the younger ones who would have had cancer by the age of 28  but because id been having smears every year for 5 years they picked up the abnormal cells , i then had a colpcoscopy which showed i was cin3 , this is the last stage b4 u actualyl have cancer . they were removed in may 2005 , and i tell u it did hurt like hell , and i gto infected too and was in hossy for 3 days on a drip , but thats nothing to what i would have gone through if id got cancer .

also (this is embbarrassing) when i had my first at 18 , it showed i had a sti ( fing ex i later found out had cheated on me ) , now because i had that smear , i got all cleared up b4 any damage was done. imagine if i hadnt of gone till i was 25 . i would have had that infection for what 7 years  and there were no symptoms !

so yes , its importent , and i would say stuff min age limits and just get one done !

my mums been on about this so i thought i should call doctors and said i was 20 have just had a baby could i request a smear ... NOPE! not till im 25, bloody fantastic if i get cervical cancer in the next 5 years ill be a bit buggered!  :x :x   :x :x
