Does anyone know when the blood gets taken for the combined screening for Down syndrome is it at the same time as the NT scan? My letter inviting me for the scan doesn’t mention bloods aswell and the midwife didn’t say how it works, Thanks in advance! X

At my local hospital you go to the ward after your 12 week scan for them to take a blood sample. x

I think it's different for each hospital. I don't remember it being done at all for my first, definitely not at the scan, and now I'm at a different hospital I have an appt 8 days before my scan to have bloods done for it.

Might be worth calling the antenatal ward and asking just to be sure?

Yeah I think I will call up and check as I’m not actually going to hospital for the scan I’m going to a local clinic so they may have less facilities there, would rather have it done on the day or beforehand x

So just asked my sister, who literally knows EVERYTHING

She said they do the downs test and bloods, but as firstfreakout says other places might be different, but i did also think the 12 week one was the downs and usual bloods

I had mine done at the same time. Scan first, then while you wait for the sonographer to write their report you get your blood taken

So did they take the blood at the same time Charlotte? X

I refused the screening but at my hospital they offered it on the same day as the 12 week scan.

Like you say worth checking with yours as it seems like they're all different.

It's normally done at 12 week scan because it has to be done between 11 and 14 weeks

nightowl, I found out today at my booking in why my hospital does the bloods at a different time to the scan.

Apparently they take them about a week before the scan so they already have the results when they take the measurements during the scan. That way they can tell you the results there and then instead of waiting for them and sending off letters.

Part of me thinks this is a great idea, because not only does it calm any worries about the results then and there, but also can give people the news of being high risk for Downs etc in person. Part of me is annoyed that this is yet another appointment I have to get to! (I now have 5 between now and middle of November...)

Just thought you might like to know! :)

Ah thanks Hun I think it’s much better to do it that way as the sooner you can find out the better but it looks like where I am they take the bloods on the day of the scan then you’ve gotta wait for the result to come through think you get a phone call if it’s high risk, would rather just know at the same time as the scan! X

I had bloods done same day as scan. Results came in the post in about 2 weeks. They said we would get a phone call sooner if we were high risk.

Our area (Sussex) is same day as scan but think the idea of doing them a week earlier is a really good one!

Yes they did i had my scan first then went in waiting room to wait abit for my bloods x

Oxfordshire - scan first then straight in to the next room for bloods. We get a call within a day or two if it's high risk, then a letter a week or so later.
