Hello,

Can anyone give me any advice?

My lo is 11 days old and I've been breastfeeding since she was born. She has no problems latching on and getting a feed but it hurts me so much. I think I was latching wrong and have had advice from midwife, health visitor, support worker and breastfeeding clinic. Today my midwife said my nipples didn't look sore anymore and I seem to be latching correctly but it still really hurts when lo feeds everytime.. It's at the point it's making me miserable and dreading feeding, and contemplating just giving up. I have been expressing a bit for oh to do a night feed (which lo had taken to ok luckily) but I don't think I could express enough to just bottle feed without spending all day expressing!

Feeling so down about it :-(

Advice welcome
Rachxx

Hugs and well done in breastfeeding through the pain so far, you're doing great!!!! I'm now 10 weeks in and still remember the days of sitting in tears whilst feeding and dreading baby waking up as knew he'd want a feed straight away due to pain! But it really does get easier... Keep going if you can. Week 4 was my turning point and was completely pain free by week 6.

It sounds like you've done the right thing getting lots of support and had the latch checked so that's the main thing. Has your baby been checked for a tongue tie as that can cause pain? Does the pain last the whole feed? I think (based on my own experience and MW advice) it is completely normal to have 30 seconds or so of toe curling pain in the early weeks but as your nipples get used to being munched on that eases over time. I know I had to tell myself each morning that today would be easier than yesterday.

Sorry I'm not much help but really hope it starts to be less painful for you soon. Make sure you larger up on Lansinoh cream before/after each feed and allow air to get to your nipples to help heal them xxx

I'd second checking for tongue tie. I had terrible pain and got told to keep at it but it didn't improve even when my nipples healed. My pain continued through the whole feed. I had it cut and am at this moment feeding without pain.

I found out on here that tt can cause pain. It was never mentioned by any breastfeeding support workers.
