Hi I started weaning lo a few weeks ago, she's now nearly 6 months and has 3 little meals a day after her milk, just some puréed fruit/veg at the moment and baby rice or porridge in the morning. The problem is she is now having hardly any formula. Even last night she slept from 8 to 7 and when she woke up she had 1oz! I tried for ages and then gave up and gave her some porridge instead. I'm a bit concerned as I read that when weaning they still need around 500mls a day of formula to get all the nutrients they need. I've tried giving it in a cup instead but no luck with that either. Has anyone else experienced this and if so what happened? Maybe she will start having more again soon but just wondered if this usually happens? Thanks...

My hv said that if they dropped below the amount required for them to get all the nutrients then to start using vitamin drops (either in the milk or seperately depends which sort you get) to make up for the milk consumption.

Edit- I gave some food first followed by milk and I didn't have this problem but he loves his milk, he does an excited wiggley dance when he sees it. Give it some time and you might find the milk consumption improves, if not try the vitamins

I haven't experienced this problem but maybe try reducing the amount of solids LO has as maybe she isn't drinking milk due to being full x

To be honest my LO was crap with his milk in the first place, which is why we weaned him early. He'd had bad reflux and I think he just associated milk with pain.

Try leaving a good hour between feeds and offering solids so she has time to build up an appetite.

Also I used to sneak formula into all my LO's food, so made his porridge with it and added some to his fruit purees with a bit of baby rice to thicken it out.

Well I always offer the milk before solids so she can't be full already. Will try adding formula to her food like you say, at least she will get a little more that way. Will also check which vitamins to give her, thanks guys.

I'm doing baby led weaning this time for this reason amongst others as my first also dropped milk very quickly once we started weaning. As milk is still the most important form of nutrition until one, I'm keen to introduce solids a lot more slowly this time. X

littlemonkey makes a good suggestion - I used to make my little girls baby rice etc with formula milk as it is a good way to get the required amount of milk in them x

I agree with the others about putting milk in food. Even the purées add a wee bit milk no matter what it is. Would be disgusting for us but babies love it
