Hi to all my PCOS sisters. I just want to share some of the things I've learned about PCOS, things that help ovulation, etc b/c I figure it's great that it's helped me and even better if I can help someone else who's trying to conceive and having trouble.
I had irregular periods and lots of trouble ovulating for my ENTIRE life until I did two very simple things: I started drinking at least a litre and a half of water every day and I switched to sweeteners in my hot drinks instead of sugar.
Let's face it - your body needs a HELL of a lot of water to function properly. I found the easiest way to do this was just to get a big bottle of water and keep it near me (on my desk at work or next to me while watching tv, etc). I tended to drink it w/o even thinking about it, and it really helped not only my body function properly but helped me with UTIs (I tended to get them frequently) and with not feeling so tired all the time.
And everyone with PCOS does (or should) know about the sugar problem - PCOS is obviously linked to blood sugar issues, so the less sugar and complex carbs you can put into your body the better. Unfortunately, this includes things like potatoes, bread and pasta, and frequently includes things like milk and yoghurt. But, I found the biggest cuplrit for me was sugars in my teas and coffees - it's amazing how much of that crap you can get through in a day without realising it. Switching to sweeteners (I used the pills) dramatically decreased my daily sugar intake.
Within about a month my cycle started to regulate just after doing these two things, and I got pregnant for the first time in July. Sadly, it wasn't meant to be this time and our little one went to heaven just this week, but the fact that I am able to get pregnant means the world to me and I am looking forward to trying again once we heal from this sadness.
I'm a big advocate for trying natural means before chemical-filled prescription drugs, and I bought, read and thoroughly enjoyed the book 'Taking Charge of your Fertility' by Toni Weschler, which is basically a guide to naturally tracking your fertility. It's fascinating and an easy read, and for those of you who would like to save a bit of money on ovulation strips, etc, I highly recommend it, not only for that reason but because I feel that every woman should know what their body is trying to tell them.
Sorry if I sound like a 'know-it-all'; I just know that I tried for ages to find a solution to my problem, and this worked for me, and if I can help someone else with the same problem, even better. Best of luck!!
