I'm sure most of you have an opinion on this.

I cut my smoking right down to a couple a day when I started IUI (it's very stressful) and when I got bfp I quit.

Well, I bumped into a friend of mine a couple of days ago and she is still smoking occasionaly at 29 weeks pregnant.

Yesterday I was shopping and got chatting to a woman that had just found out that she was 5 months and she smelt of fags, I asked her about the local hospital's facilities and she said it was good as they watched the baby when she went out for a fag  .

For those of you that have quit do you think you will go back to fags after baby is here? I don't know if I will or not, I think I might find it hard to not have one as I haven't got the incentive not to. I actually found quitting very easy as only smoked a few a day.

ive never smoked so cant really comment, i dont agree with it but thats easy for me to say as like ive said i have never done it

i can appreciate how hard it is though as my OH smoked heavily when we first met, he tried to give up and cut down but i could see it was a struggle

then one day he got a very bad chest infection which docs said could lead to emphysema, he couldnt even climb the stairs without getting out of breath, this scared him and he stopped smoking completely, i think it took this scare though

he had lung function/capacity tests and the results enough were frightening, he got help and support from the docs and stopped, not overnight but he stopped

i am so so proud of him, he now also goes running every day and is healthier than ever, he said that he wants to be a fit dad that can run around the park with his kids

so you can do it hun, there is lots of help out there

I've never smoked either, not even tried it. My best friends Dad had lung cancer due to smoking, but found out too late and 5 days later he passed away. Just not worth it.

I think if you can manage to cut it out when pregnant then you should be able to keep it up when baby is here. It's down to your own will power.

I think those adverts a while back with smoke coming out a babys mouth and nostrils are shoking, and really hope that made a difference.

My brothers OH smoked while pregnant, but now baby is here, they asked me to take him out the kitchen while they smoked?!! Bit backwards really!

smoking makes me feel soooooooooo sick now :puke:

to tell you the truth i found it extremely easy to stop smoking when i found out i was preg. I won't go back to smoking on a fegular basis but i do enjoy a fag when i go out for a drink. Seeing as i won't be going out drinkin alot after iv had my little man anyways 1 or 2 on a night out won't hurt!

Try to look at it with the incentive still there once LO arrives. Even more so once your LO is here I reckon.

A few reasons, and please know this is not intended to scare monger as its common knowledge but I'd thought it worth mentioning again as it may give you incentive to not start smoking again :)

a) Your health. You will have a child to bring up and smoking does increase risk of ill health from many minor things (out of breath, skin aging early) to far more serious, which I am sure I don't need to list. I consider that being fit and healthy as possible is a big benifit to bringing up a child.

b) SIDS - studies and medical advice say that this risk is increased when parent/s smoke, before or after pregnany.

c) Save yourself a fortune and pop the money in a jar for a special treat/holiday or some such for LO.

d) Clean smelling clothes and hair. (its the one thing that makes my stomach heave when I stand or sit next to a smoker. The smell of stale ciggarette smoke :puke: )

e) Your child is less likely to smoke if parents don't smoke (I recall reading somewhere).

FWIW I used to smoke, I quit years ago now and have never looked back. Don't miss it, have better health and am much fitter. My mother smoked when I was a child (not through her pregnancy though) and I always remember worrying about her dying from cancer and used to write little messages on her cig packs to beg her to quit. She finally did about 7 years ago  However I do partially blame her smoking round the house and me for my cough and lung/asthma problems. No one really considered the wellbeing of a child when smoking back then. But now I consider not just my health when around smokers now but that of my child. I'd rather not breathe have LO or myself breathe in 2nd hand smoke and therefore minimise any kind of risk.

Hopefully you can remain a non smoker once your LO arrives :D I find if you never have that first one, then its pretty straightforward. And after a while you soon stop missing it.

My Mum done this at new year...she bought a HUGE new TV for £900 which is the most expensive thing I;ve ever known her to get. To pay for it though, she has to put her cigarette money aside to keep up the payments!

My fave thing about the smoking ban! Coming back from the pub, not smelling like you've been to a pub! x

yep i love the smoking ban

even though i dont smoke after a night out i always smelt like an ashtray, used to make me feel :puke:

yep have to agree with this! it's such a nice difference :D

I smoked about 20 a day until the day I got my BFP. I knew it would be hard to give up but for me smoking while being pregnant is not an option. That mindset alone helped me quit. I worried that I might start again, but I agree with Sherlock, once bubs is here there is even more incentive. The main one for me was cotdeath.
Even if you smoke outside you bring all the cr@p back in with you. Its just not worth the risk. It also scares me sick that I might miss any of my sons life through my own stupid choices. That thought breaks my heart.

I have had the occasional one since he was born but only when I have had too much to drink  which I wish I had never done, but when you're tipsy it seems like a good idea! If you don't want to start again hun, I'm sure you won't. You've already proved you have willpower

In Gran Canaria I really noticed the difference with people smoking in the bars as they have no smoking ban yet.

I don't like coming out of shopping centres/pubs into a cloud of smoke when people are standing outside the door smoking :puke:

This is so true... one of the leaflets I got in pregnancy says that smokers shouldn't handle a child for an hour or so after their last cigarette. Not really possible as a mum with a newborn!

Even if you've stopped there is support out there, have a look at http://gosmokefree.nhs.uk/ and just think - you've already done the hard part so give yourself a huge pat on the back! It's probably easier for you to not start again than it would be to stop if you started smoking again.

I read this too! Made me even more determined to make sure baby daddy isnt around her much

He only smoked a few a day when we met, and because i dont smoke he wouldnt smoke when i was around and would only smoke on weekends whilst out. He kept promising to quit for Tally but never did. In fact he smokes more now then ever before.

He doesnt have the incentive to quit cos she's not enough for him, I think knowing what your smoke can do to your baby and to yourself will be enough to keep you away from them. Plus you'll want baby to smell all lovely and fairy soft you wont wanna rub your smokey smell off on to them

I'm quite unsympathetic towards smokers tbh, mainly cos i've never smoked myself and the smokers i've been around are like him, they know they arnt addicted and what it does to them etc but still smoke and moan about the costs etc.

It's good that you've not smoked since your BFP and i believe if you can do it this long, you can continue after, you just have to do it for you and baby

I stopped about a month before my BFP and once i found out there was no way i'd smoke. Must admit it has been on my mind if i will start smoking again. Really hope i don't but don't feel like i can say never. I won't let anyone smoke near my LO and 'they' say that smokers let out toxic fumes for upto an hr after having a cig! Really don't think i will but on a nice day sat in the garden with a glass of wine and a cig just sounds like heaven! xx

This is the same for me.

Damn the smelly fag woman in the shop, I hadn't thought about fags since November :x .

I gave up when I got my BFP too, before that I was on about 15 a day. I didn' find it that difficuly to stop and I think morning sickness helped a lot (at least its good for one thing) The only time I realy craved on was when I was on hospital, I would never do it though. I was surprised by the amount of women who were smoking outside the unit though

With regards to after the baby, I really really don't want to start again. As others have said, I wouldn't be comfortable around the baby after having one. I know I'll be most likely to when I go out and have a drink and am with smokers- thats when he urge will probably start but I hope and  that I won't give in.

I quit when i found out i was pregnant @ 6 weeks!

I havent gone back to it, was worried i would but the smell is still mingin and dont think i will ever go back to it!!

Good luck!!

I smoked up until a month before getting my BFP and think it might have added to my being able to conceive. I really hope I don't go back to it after my LO is born. The smell of stale smoke is horrible although whilst pregnant I have found I love the smell of someone smoking and it kinda made me want one.

TBH it is the toxic fumes breathed out an hour after having a cigarette that really gets to me. I do not want to submit Oscar to that, it isn't fair on him. Seeing as I would be the primary caregiver, that will leave me little if any time to fit cigarettes into my day so yay - no more smoking fo rme hopefully :)

OMG i used to love the smell of baby daddy when i'd meet him, booze and fags!! 2 things i wouldnt have touched myself but for some reason when he smelt like it i loved it!

Not sure it'd work now though

:cheer: Well done for giving up Hazel!

You've done so well to come this far so try not to be tempted back into it!

Well done you for stopping. TBH I found it quite easy not to smoke when I had my BFP as I just kept imaging blowing smoke over a baby (which is a hideous image) and so I don't think I will take it up again as the smell makes me feel sick & I have also read the bit about breathing it out for an hour afterwards. (Although ask me that question again after 3 days of solid crying & bad colic!!!)

It feels a bit pointless to me to take up such a bad habit when I have already quit once.

And also in the past year 3 people have died and 2 more have been diagnosed with cancer. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM SMOKES/SMOKED. That really gave me pause for thought.
