My OH seems to have taken a fancy to one of the boy names i have suggested but now i'm starting to worry about it.

My dad is called John so i suggested Johnny or Jonathan (sp?) and my husband seemed to have taken a fancy to the name Johnny.

He could convert it to John if they want to be more mature.

I like the name, but it's quite a common slang term for a condom as i know you all know "rubber johnnies".

Both John and Jonathan are both decent names imo but a little dull, especially with my super dull surname.

I know it's premature but it'll be something ticked off the list.

What to you think of someone calling their child Johnny?

I love the name jonathan,I'm a big fan of longer names that can b shortened as they get older. Xx

It would be a strong contender for us except that surname is Wilkinson (will only mean anything to you if you are a rugby fan, we are big style!) and also one of my husbands mates is called Johnny, short for Jonathan (and i wouldnt name my baby after him). But my father is John and his brothers call him Johnie, and I would have liked to put it on my list.

I would say it is a name that will never be unfashionable, it is warm and likeable and has the advantage of being shortened or lengthened as appropriate. It's definitely a good choice.

I like it. I know loads of fellas with that name and as far as I know none if them have got any stick for sharing their name with the slang for condom  Go for it :)

Oh yes, I should add that the term rubber johnnies is very 1950's and it's unlikely it's still used in the playground. It most definitely was not what i thought of when i hear Johnny (I just hear Drop Goal!!! We win the world cup and send Austalia packing :yay:)

I think jonathan then can be shortened to either johnny or john if you choose
XxX

Thanks ladies :) I feel much better about it.

I don't like shortened names, i have to call my baby what i will be calling him everytime i refer to him - so if i used Jonathan, i would always say Jonathan and not shorten it to Johnny.

I'm really anal about things like that ;)

I love Johnathan, but would def not use Johnny because of the exact reason you mentioned

I know what you mean, my little boy is going to be called Matthew, and so many people have turned round and said 'so he will be a Matt?' im like 'No his name will be Matthew!'
If he decides to shorten it when he is older that's fine, but im sure he will always be
Matthew to me!

My youngest bro is a Jonathan.. and he's been called Joff for years :D I like Jonathan (the name, obviously I like my brother lol) and I think Joff is cool too. Not many about!

My friend called her baby John.. and he was Baby Johnny straight away and that really suited him too.

If you like it go with it :D xxx

its my older brothers name!! we call him jonty though! x
