Hi ladies,

I have my first midwife appointment tomorrow, and getting confused about what will happen!

I'll be 11 weeks +2 days. According to some things I've read, I'll have lots of form filling and questions, plus have a blood test and urine sample done. Does that sound right to you girls?

Also, will this blood test (if I have one) be part of any screening tests, like Down's etc? Somewhere I read these tests are done at 16 weeks, and other places are saying they are done in the first trimester...

I tried calling my midwife this morning, but just got her voicemail - and by the sounds of it she might not be working today so I might not get a call back before tomorrow.

I know I've only got a day to wait and find out, but would like to be prepared!!

my booking bloods tested for HIV, syphillis and rubella, and full blood count, iron ect.. i think, then i had downs screening bloods taken at 16 weeks.

Oh and you get a booklet that explains all the screening and when its done at your booking too :) xx

I did;t have any blood taken at my booking in appointment, I got told it would be when I go for my scan!! but the letter only mentions a scan not bloods and wee so we will see what happens.

At booking appointment bloods are taken for rubella, hiv, syphillis, blood group and count. If you are wanting downs screening you will have bloods taken at or around time of your first scan xx

hi

at your booking in appt its lots of form filling etc, you have bloods done if you need to be tested for sickle cell, i didnt need this as i had it done 4 years ago when i was pregnant then, so my next lot of bloods are being done on thurs at the hosp when i have scan, they are to test for downs etc. but i think it also depends on the area you live etc as everywere is different!!

Good Luck hun, but you will be fine xx

Thanks all for your replies. I'm wondering then if they will do bloods for everything tomorrow, as my scan is only next week?

Hhmmm...suppose we will find out tomorrow!
x

If it helps anyone...I am booked in for my first scan at (assuming) 12 weeks pregnant next Tuesday 1st November...and I know already that I have to give a form in that the midwife gave me which agrees to have bloods taken there and then as far as I know which will test for downs.

xxx

Well - I had my appointment today!

It took ageesssssss - almost 2 hours. There was lots of form filling/questions, plus she gave us lots of leaflets and information, plus a big book and a booklet which has all of my notes in it. I then had bloods taken for syphillis/HIV/blood group etc, and filled in a form for the Down's/Spina Bifida screening blood test, which I have on the same day as my scan next week.

I also had to give a urine sample, and was given an extra empty sample pot as I need to bring a sample to my 16 week appointment.

The midwife was lovely. I had spoken to her on the phone before, and to be honest I was a little wary of what she'd be like as she seemed quite abrupt - but she was great! Any questions me or hubby had she answered in depth and explained everything really well.

All in all a good appointment (aside from the blood test - I hate them, yuk!) and only a half day at work for me today :o)

I hope all this helps someone else in my position xx

Awwww glad all went well today chic. 2 hours wow bet your worn out xx
