My supply teaching job for this afternoon was in the nursery of a primary school - I'm not used to kids that young - some had only just turned 3 in the summer holidays so they were really young! I don't know how the nursery teachers do it - give me yr 6 any day!!! One of the little boys was screaming for his mum not to go and his mum must have been devastated to leave him because I could have easily broken down myself and I don't even know the child!! :rotfl: Stupid old thing I am! What will I be like when I've got my own :wall: :wall:

Oh bless! If you can cope with a class of toddlers you can def cope with a baby! I take my hat off to you though, I dunno how I would cope with older kids let alone a load of toddlers. Ones enough for me at the moment

I did some supply in nurserys and I can honestly say you couldn't pay me enough!!! I found it so bloody boring I was itching to teach them something and wanted them all to sit down!!!

Missac I feel the same! I feel like I'm totally dossing around playing with paints and playdoh! I'm used to teaching the 6 x tables (ha! yeah right!!) and apostrophes!

Tut tut :shakehead:

Don't you girls know it's what you do with the paints and playdough that make learning fun! You two aren't going to like the changes that are filtering through Primary ed!! Hands on learning based on investigation and practical experience.....it's how Europe does it and their results are sooo much better than ours in the long term. Bring it on I say!

Ooh I am all for hands on learning and learning by doing, I think it is the lack of structure in the nursery that gets me. I know that as the little ones are playing they are exploring and learning all the time but there is something about the nursery that I just don't like, I am not explaining myself very well really. I guess it could be the lack of interaction, with a primary class you are getting constant feedback off the kids and you can have some fun with them.

Another thing about the nursery is that it is am and pm children, so once you have done the am you have to go back and do it all over a bloody gain!! Two days for the price of one!!!!

OH i never said that there was anything wrong with it but as I'm not used to sitting watching children painting I feel like a bit of a spare part...in fact I'm all for a lot more play activities throughout the whole of the school! It's amazing how excited 11 and 12 yr olds get when you give them a dressing up box - too much pressure on them to be adults as such a young age.

I can sort of see what you mean about Nursery if I look at it from your point of view. Coming into that a setting from from Y6 without much experience of very young children would be quite daunting. Traditionally teaching KS2 has taken a very different approach to KS1. I feel it's very positive that principles from Foundaton Stasge and KS1 will be carried through the rest of school, it will certainly benefit the children. Not sure how it will be received by some teachers though!! :rotfl:

Unfortunately, Infant teachers get so sick of people thinking all they do is watch "the little ones play". If I had a quid for every time I've heard that I could retire now!!! There is so much planning and preparation - and have you seen the Foundation Stage Profile ????? Enough to make your eyes water!

Anyway, I'll get off my high horse now ....Sorry for preaching :D

:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: This made me roll I was a Nursery Nurse for Nearly 10 yrs specialising in under 5's and a Manager of an 80 place Nursery and yes it is really really hard work but soo rewarding i loved it :D

I left thinking "I don't know how they do it....!" (esp the reception class!!!)but I guess it's the same the other way when you see teachers with mouthy 10 and 11 yr olds to contend with!!!

The school that I had a contract at last term is being rebuilt to make it into a primary rather than infants and juniors on diff sites. The plan is to have a "Play" room which sounds like a good idea but only select groups (you can imagine which sorts of children) will be able to play in it - I think that every child throughout the school should have the opportunity.

I had a child in my class aged 11 and really, playing with the sand and pouring water into different sized cups would have done him the world of good!!
