Well it all started with a good 5 minute bounce on the kids trampoline five days overdue!
That night at 7.30ish my waters went and after waiting a while to check that it was my waters i puddled my way to the hospitol where they confirmed. At this point i was only having irregular bh's and my cervix was still posterior. At home i decided to keep active and tidy up, I carried on with this until 9pm where i decided that i would have something to eat to keep my strength up for later. After eating i was going to watch Big brother, i rang my birthing parner to say that i woud see how i felt at 11pm and if she needed to come over. Well half an hour later i was timing contractions 2 minutes apart and lasting between 40- 120 seconds so at 11pm i gave her the nod to come.
I was coping very well and walked through all of the contractions - i took a rest at about 1.30pm where i actually managed to fall asleep between contractions! At 2.30am we decided that as the contractions were a minute apart we would ring the mw how came and examined me - to my suprise i was only 4-5 cm. I had a bath and continued to work through the contractions. I requested some gas and air by this point as there was no let up and i was contracting every minute.
Just before the midwife set it up she listened in for babies heart beat, after a long pause i said to her that is my heartbeat - she placed her hand on my pulse and continued to listen - the heart beat was the babies and my heart sank as i realised this was the second time it had happened. From then on things sped up - i was told i would have to go into the unit to be monitored. This then changed to being taken to the city hospitol in an ambulance. I managed to stay clm and prayed the whole way there.
Once there i was monitored - it was 4.45am on arrival. Babies heart beat was fine but there were about 6 people in the room watching me - i asked why thinking they were about to whip me off for c section and they said they were just waiting to see what baby did!
Well after labouring on the bed for an hour and making ful use of the gas and air I began to feel like puching - they wouldn't examine me to see if i was dilated - i think because it was too early after the last time.
I started to half push and was then told the baby was back to back and the doctor was going to use a mw's forceps to turn it - her hands to you and me Apparantly she put both hands up me bits turned babies head and held it in that position until it was in the birth canal! It took me 12 minutes to push my beautiful gir into the world and i was even encouraged to push without contractions.
When she was paced on my tum i rubbed her but she didn't seem to respond - so she was given some oxygen and i soon heard that magical cry. It turns out the reason her heartbeat had dropped was because her cord was wrapped tightly round her neck twice.
After that she was fine and is a very content little babe. I am in absolute awe of her - and her delivery has made her all the more special as you realise how precious these little lives are. I didn't get the home birth i wanted, but that didn't matter and i am so greatful to the hospitol and my birhing partner for such a fab experience.
