Right I have a few months to fully potty train an unwilling child - help!

I think we're making progress. Started potty training on Wednesday. I've got sticker charts, chocolate buttons, decorated the potty, picked out his own pants, watched the panda potty training song on YouTube, read books on it...

We were on the 7th pair of pants by lunch time! He was looking at me like 'silly mummy forgot to put my nappy on!' And didn't really get why we were doing it!

Thursday was a little better. He seemed to be saving up his wees and doing long ones rather than lots of little ones and the success rate was about 50%.

Friday was fab, every wee went in the potty. We even went to the pub for tea and he stayed dry. 2x poo in the pants though.
This morning we've gone backwards though and there has been two wees on the floor!

A question for those who are further on than me.. Jack won't go on the potty on his own. I have to notice the signs and ask him to use the potty, which he does (for a chocolate) but if I'm not in the room he will just go on the floor. Does this stop soon? I need him to have the confidence to use it when I'm not around, I've got pants to wash! This is by far the hardest thing I've done so far but the look on his little face when he realises he's weeing in the potty is priceless! Xxx

Cam is just finishing week two and still doesn't ask. He's asked a couple of times and that's it.

Mind you he will be stood holding his Willy and jiggling and legs crossed and still say no he doesn't need a wee! I'll stick him on the potty anyway and sure enough, he'll go.

It'll all come in time.

My son had a nappy off day yesterday. Not for the purpose of potty training but because his bum was very very sore. Anyway, went through four pants BUT got three decent wees and a semi decent poop in the potty.... though he did seem to spend most of the day sitting on the potty! Anyway, a mild success and think I'll try potty training again at the weekend (he has preschool today and is with his grandparents this afternoon, otherwise I'd go right back into again today).

Oh that's great hun!

Well done!! :-)

Cam has had a few accidents recently- mainly code brown situations! I stopped prompting him quite so much but he still doesn't ask so I'm going back to reminding him again.

We haven't had a successful poo yet. The nursery staff told me last week he got really upset when he had a poo in his pants and asked for a pull up. He's never done that at home. I wasn't even aware he knew they were pull ups! They're special pants at home.
The last few days he's been holding it in til he gets in the bath then there is a code brown situation. My dad suggested putting the potty in the bath before any water so will try that later.
He's 100% dry though and just announces he needs a wee and takes himself off to the potty. Xxx

Well done to all those who have had successes.... It gives me hope but also makes me feel so sad as James is nowhere near ready.

We had a code brown incident earlier!

I just wish he would ask when he needs to go or just say yes when I ask him!!

Oh well, he's getting there.

Nat I'm sure James will be ready soon enough

Wees come a lot easier than poos generally!! Took at least 6 weeks to stop my son pooing in his pants- and now 4 months on he holds on all day and poos the second I put him to bed(in a nappy)!!

If they are not ready to potty train it is seriously not worth stressing yourself out and as for them not wearing nappy when they start preschool, if this was a requirement I would not be sending my child there! It isn't uncommon for children and particularly boys not to be ready until they are around 3. Some take even longer!

Its also especially hard when you have other siblings to look after as you can't focus 100% attention on one child!

Rooster that's great!! Well done!

Carnat, James will get there. I remember reading this thread when you initially posted it and my daughter showed zero signs of being ready then suddenly one day she was interested and I took it from there.

I'm in a similar boat with the poo situation. She'll tell me she needs to poo then panicks and doesn't quite know what to do with herself. A few times she'll do it in the potty but at other times she'll wait until her nappy goes on for a nap or bed time. I guess that will come with time. For the most part she's doing well and has progressed to the toilet. I still prompt her a bit but have stopped needing too so much recently but like Emily we had a code brown incident recently that's led me to having to prompt her again.

I put him in pants yesturday and got three big wees in his potty but only because I noticed his pants were starting to get wet so had to plonk him on the potty. He seriously hates the potty though, despite the progress. Every time he was put on the potty he cried and asked for hugs until he finally peed. Not sure whether to carry on or give it a rest for a bit.

Have you tried one of those seat things that go over the big toilet?

James hates his potty and the toilet!!!

Yes and no. I've only got as far as asking if he'd like to sit on the toilet and get a big fat NO, I WANT MY NAPPY ONNNN!

We have the toilet seats at the ready though.

Argh. I really didn't expect potty training to be so difficult...

I've not been on here for a while, but I gave up with the potty after going through about three pairs of pants in an hour! When I mentioned about going with outside a nappy or getting on the potty he's not happy about it. It's interesting to see though that some of the boys with relatively new siblings are experiencing similar. Maybe it is a bit of a security for them.

I'd like to make a decent go of it over the summer before he starts at playgroup, but we don't have the same rush others do, so I'm not pushing it. It will be next September before he's at preschool.

Hi girls, Harry turned 3 last week so I've decided we must get rid of the nappies during the day! He's been using the potty while naked for around a year so yesterday I left him naked all day and he just gets the potty out when he needs to go- no prompting needed. He even tries to empty it out! Today we've arranged to go swimming and I don't know what to do. Do I put pants on him and hope for the best? It's a bit daunting! Xx
