Right I have a few months to fully potty train an unwilling child - help!

Ruddy nightmare. Got his pants, peed and pooped in them. Sat him on the potty and he'd hold tight to the wee or poop. Get him off the potty after an hour and off he'd go to wee on the floor...

Lots of nappy off times and just going toilet or potty every so often so they get the idea.. You'll probably find once it clicks it will be alot easier.. I was very very lucky though as at 2 years 2 4 months my LG just decided no more nappies and has been dry day and night since, good luck hope it goes smoothly xx

Cam has caught my lurgy and woken up with a horrible cold this morning.

Should make for an interesting day two!

Won't be going to playgroup though, so just one trip out in the car to contend with!

Poor little man :-(

Day two:

No accidents... yet.

One wee on the potty!!

Woo hoo!!

He's currently sticking stars all over his potty. Hopefully he'll like it more once he's decorated it!

Hahaha, love that he's decorated the potty with stickers!

I tried my little fella with a bit of nappy off time this morning, just easing him into it. He started kicking off when I took his nappy off and ended up on the naught seat after hitting me in the face! Eventually he sat on the potty for a bit and did bugger all. Then when it came to nappy going back on, he then threw another strop! I'm amazed I got us all out the house by 9am this morning!

I'm just going to keep giving him some nappy off time before getting rid completely at the weekend when I have the OH for moral support.

My son did three decent wees in his potty but only because i had to sit him down on the potty to do it, because he was dancing around stropping and asking for his nappy. His nappy went on before his nap and he completely filled it up almost instantly.

I've had to force/ bribe Cam into sitting on the potty!

He's resisted less than yesterday which is progress!!

So yesterday ended up two accidents and two successes.

This morning he said he wanted to use the potty. So I took off his NAPPY and he sat on the potty and did a wee! :-) :-) :-)

He had said he wanted chocolate and I said he could have chocolate when he did wees and poos in his potty and he said he wanted to use the potty right now and sure enough he did!! :-) I'm so chuffed because he was still in his overnight nappy so could have just gone for a wee if he wanted!

I'm less chuffed about chocolate buttons at this hour of the morning but hey ho! I said he could have two, he picked one out and I said one then his hand went in again and I said two and he grabbed like five and chucked then in his mouth!! Cheeky little monkey!! Hopefully the rest of the day will continue in the same vein!!

Question though... Cam is off for his final taster session at nursery tomorrow. It's for an hour and I was planning on trying to leave him there for the hour to see how he goes without me. I don't want to leave him there just in pants in case he has an accident so do you think it would hurt if I stuck him in some pull ups for an hour so I can go or better to leave him in pants and stay with him?

XX

That's fab progress Emily! Well done Cam! I don't have experience with the nursery thing but I'd say it sounds like a good idea as he may be a little traumatized if he has an accident there?

Ours is going ok, not amazingly though. She's only worn nappies at nap and bed time and either knickerless or knickers at all other times since Friday. She doesn't seem to pee much? Only 1 in morning and 1 in the afternoon. Her nappies are wet in the morning and sometimes wet after nap times.
Yesterday morning she said she needed a wee and I told her to sit on the potty and she did it! In the afternoon she kept saying no then weed next to the potty.
Our main progress is she's stopped asking for a nappy and doesn't seem to be scared of the potty anymore. So I'll keep plodding on. As my mum keeps saying - Rome wasn't built in a day!

Yeah, I think you're right. He really needs good associations with nursery and I don't want him upset by having an accident while he's there. I'll stick him in a pull up and explain that it's just this one time.

It's funny you mention about how much lo wees as I thought the same about Cam yesterday. He only weed four times which I didn't think was very much. I pee like a gazillion times a day!

It's good that your lo is getting more comfortable with the potty :-) and clever girl for doing a wee in it!!

I'm hoping that there'll be progress each day.

No progress for us. My OH had him with nappy off this morning. He weed in it after being forced to sit on it and then demanded his nappy back on. It's like he does a wee for our benefit in order to get it back on.

Another wee in the potty.

Used my kindle as a bit of a distraction- put some train videos on it for him to watch and he sat there for ages bless him. Didn't wee then but did when I sat him on it again later.

Rooster I'm sure your lo will pick it up soon enough. It's really frustrating though isn't it. Can't say I'm enjoying the process although today so far has been the best.

No progress for us either. Had nappy off time for alnost an hour this morning but he didn't go?

The past few days have been tricky as we've been out right up until nap time so he's not had any nappy off time other than morning's. Need to ramp it up.

He sits on potty but doesn't do anything.

James is very defiant and I need to be careful as once something becomes an issue he can be very stubborn. A good example is drinking.... I noticed a few months back he wasn't drinking and went into a panic (GP ruled anything untoward out) but he had me at breaking point as he refused to drink for almost 24h. I tried different cups, straws, different drinks. I even resorted to offering chocolate milk and a vanilla milkshake from mac d. I even tried to syringe fluid into him. We tried praise, bribery and to my utter shame I actually got upset in front of him.. all to no avail.

Once I took a step back and left him alone he of course downed a whole cup of water!!! (Well within a few hours he had a drink)

It was all part of him testing boundaries and dealing with the new baby but it was awful and I don't want potty training to become a battle ground.

Yeah Cam can be like that too.

He's done well today- 4 successes on the potty and one accident. He's going to need to go again soon but is adamant that he doesn't and doesn't want to sit on the potty so I predict another accident before bedtime!

Still it's progress I guess.

He's so stubborn and defiant though so it was never going to be plain sailing!

It's exhausting!! Can't relax properly!!

I think every child has their issues that we struggle with. I have a few I found really hard. My daughter had a terrible thrush nappy rash for months that was awful for both of us. What a relief to get rid of that! Then we have our sleeping problems which are probably linked to breastfeeding still (she won't drink any milk!). We haven't ever had a night apart yet. She still sleeps with me at 14 months but it is slowly improving. Just last month she was up hourly now I get 4 or 5 hours between waking. The saying "this too shall pass" is something I cling on to by now. My daughter took to her potty well. She's 14 months. I decided to start early cause she was not pooping in the bath and not pooping without a nappy on for a long time. It was just a simple cheap potty. I'm not going to dictate to anyone what is best for them. What I will advise is just know when you are struggling with issues like this that it will change and get easier and better. I know sometimes it feels like you are at breaking point. I've been there but never mind you will be on to the next big problem soon and you will have forgotten all about this one haha All the effort you have put in will see fruition in the end. Good luck.

I actually just thought of something else that might help someone except some words of encouragement, my daughter used to poop while I read her stories. Maybe it would help someone to pop their child on the potty while reading them a story.

Emily that's really fab!! We had a good day too - 3/4 wees in the potty and one was when I wasn't in the room. I was telling my husband that whenever she does something in the potty it feels like when your country scores a goal in the world cup - totally out of your control yet it makes you over the moon but then you have to wait for the next one.x

So he didn't have another accident or use the potty. I think the cheeky little fella may have weed in the bath! Oh well! :-)

He's made progress every day so far, so we'll see what today brings.

It's all totally on my part at the moment though. I'm always asking him and putting him on the potty, he's not asking yet but hopefully it will click soon. He asked me for a nappy yesterday when he wanted a poo so he must be recognizing that he needs to go :-)

Well this morning has been horrible.

Half an hour's nappy off time and 3 wees NOT in the potty. First wee he told me he had done it (and asked me to clean it - on the stairs), 2nd wee he just stood in hallway and did it on carpet and then I noticed a 3rd wee on his cushion on his chair?

He'd actually watched a bit of Happy Feet sat on potty but then refused to go near it. He got quite angry "no I'm not going on potty"

Feeling very deflated and actually quite angry. He seemed to do everything not to wee in his potty. Of course I wouldn't tell him I'm angry but he seems to think its ok to wee all over the house as I'll just clean it up?

I've explained that its ok to have accidents but this wasn't an accident.

I've had to count to ten a couple of times when Cam has refused to sit on the potty and just runs away from me!

It's so frustrating!!

He did a wee in the potty this morning, on the promise of a chocolate biscuit!!
