Rhesus neg blood

Just wondering if anybody here has rhesus negative blood, and has had a second pregnancy. I've just been reading up on it, and I'm now really concerned!

The following is on the Nct website- Production of the antibodies is not a problem in a first pregnancy, but when a woman with a rhesus negative blood type is pregnant next time with a rhesus positive baby, her antibodies can attack that baby’s red blood cells. This can result in a serious condition called haemolytic disease of the newborn, which leads to anaemia and jaundice in the baby.

Just wondering if anyone can reasure me and share their experience, as I've not long found out I'm pregnant with my second baby.

I’m only in my first pregnancy but recently found out I’m also rhesus negative. Did you have anti d injections in your last pregnancy or after birth? If so, that’s supposed to help there be less of a risk in future pregnancies

If you had anti d injections in your first pregnancy you should be fine. I have the same. I had one at 28 weeks with my first but didn’t need a second after birth as my son was also a negative blood type x

Im rhesus neg,had anti d last time round and 35 weeks with my second now no issues (touch wood!). Have had anti d again this time I'm sure as long as you have the injection there's nothing to worry about,congrats on the pregnancy! Xx

And my midwife friend said even without anti d its not really a problem until 4 or 5 pregnancies down the line. But if you had anti d you'll be fine anyway x

Thanks ladies, that's a relief! I had my jab at around 30 weeks, and remember the midwife saying I may need one after birth, but honestly cannot remember a thing as I was so high on gas and air! I would assume they did it!! Xx

You’d have only needed anti d after birth iof your first if that baby was a positive blood group. If baby is also negative, then there would’ve been no need.
We take a sample of blood from you, and a sample from the cord at delivery to ascertain babes blood group - taking the necessary action with your anti d

They usually give the injection routinely unless you specify that you don't want it. Even without the injection the chances of having major problems are slim. It is only a problem when some of the baby's blood gets into your blood stream, something that isn't supposed to happen during pregnancy or birth but happens in about 10% of births. Of that 10% everyone's bodys react differently. They keep an eye on your antibody levels to make sure they don't get too high. Low levels of antibodies are not a big deal but they usually get higher with each pregnancy.

Just had my first anti D shot this morning! Midwife said to ask about it after the birth, as if I’ll remember that! And only need it after birth is baby is positive. At my booking appt my midwife said it’s mostly for future pregnancies, I said I’m only having one !!
