Hello All
At my 20 week scan I was told that my baby has a left dilated renal pelvic which as it was described to me was the tube which connects the kidney to the bladder was slightly dilated which could be caused by some sort of blockage. Anyway i was told not to worry and id be rescanned at 28 weeks to check on it.
So ive been for my 28 weeks scan and its now dilated even more, the measurement is 8.2mm. Ive still been told not to worry because they will probably give the baby antibiotics when he's born and that should clear it up but this still doesnt stop my mind from racing. Ive also been researching it on the internet and have read that it can be a soft marker for Downs Syndrome which has really panicked me. Has anybody else had any experience of this? Ive been told time and time again that its really common but ive never heard of it before!!

Sorry hun, don't know anything about it but do that Cardiff Uni are doing a study to explore whether any of these 'soft markers' are real predictors of any developmental conditions. Hope you get some info. If its common like you say and antibiotics will clear it up fingers crossed its nothing to worry about. good luck xxx

Hi there, I would try to relax as soft markers for Down's are not really proven to mean anything for sure (which is why they are "soft" and not "hard" or definite markers). If your doctors feel like they will be able to sort it no problem try to trust them and relax. The internet is the worst, it always shows you the most horrible outcome so please try and not search too much if it stresses you out more. If you are still really stressing then definitely call your MW/OB and tell them your concerns. They should help you feel better if they really are not concerned and will explain it to you in a way less scary way than Dr. Internet!

Good luck! xx

My daughter had/has this, it wasn't spotted at all until she was 5 days overdue and I had a scan due to me being worried about her lack of movement. She was put on low dose antibiotics from birth, small dose every night before bed and took this until she was 2 years old. Grace's dilatation was minor really but they give the antibiotics as a preventative measure. You'll be pleased to know my daughter has never had a urine/kidney infection in her whole life and she is now almost 4.

Her consultant told me that unless the measurement gets to around 10mm there is no need to worry about it, generally 12mm is when they would want to monitor further.

Grace had a normal scan at 2 but the dilatation increased slightly to around 7mm. Her consultant is not worried, she is under Mr Dickson at Manchester Children's Hospital.

She had some tests as a baby to check urinary reflux etc but they came back normal and he has good flow, no blockages. They feel it was a developmental thing and she probably has a kink in a tube for a while. She is still being monitored but only once a year and she will hopefully be discharged at her next appt - she has a scan an appt in Aug/Sept.

Grace is fit and healthy, never caused her any problems at all :)

EDIT: just so you know the antibiotics don't clear it up - they are preventative to stop baby getting an infection due to the dilatation. Unfortunately it has to right itself or they can do an op if it's particularly bad. Like I say, I think it would be around 12mm or more before they looked to intervene with surgery of any kind. I thought the antibiotics would clear it as it wasn't explained to me before she was born so just wanted to let you know. Generally this type of this rights itself as they grow xx
