Finally getting around to writing this!
So 6 days after my estimated due date I'd pretty much given up on ever going into labour (yes really!) I told myself I would probably be pregnant for another week, just to stop myself from getting frustrated. Anyway, I'd had 3 sessions of accupuncture, was drinking lots of raspberry leaf tea, having a hot bath and a hot curry every day and even managing to have sex most days too. On my 6th day overdue I had a hot bath in the afternoon time followed by some nookie (actually began to feel like I was back TTC again with all this oplanned sex lol!) and we then went out for dinner that evening to our favourite Indian. It was yummy! I ordere hot versions of everything. When my meal arrived oh asked me if it was not enough. I replied that if it was any hotter I don't think I'd enjoy it. His response? Your not here to enjoy yourself!!! Cheeky bugger!
Anyway we walked home and I felt a bit of a stitch-nothing new there though. I drank some raspberry leaf tea and bounced on my ball for a bit. By about half 11 I was feeling pretty bad lower back pain. Didn't think anything of it at first but by midnight I bagan to think this could be it. I had pretty severe diarrhoea which was accompanied bY the worst cramps ever. I began to think I was just suffering with a dicky tummy. But no, I was actually having contractions accompanied by diarrhoea! Every second contraction I got came with diarrhoea so bad I was gripping the sides of the toilet howling in pain! Not how I thought my chilled out laid back labour would be haha!
Oh then started timing the contractions. They were 4 minutes apart lasting 1minute 15 seconds each!! I refused to believe it to be honest! He rang the midwife, told her how frequent & long the contractions were to which she responded "I'm on my way" . It then started to sink in that I was in labour.... Oh started to get the pool ready while I kneeled on the bedroom floor with my hands on the bed, flinging myself around with each contraction. I literally had no controll. I just couldn't believe how bad the contractions were; how frequent and how long they were lasting. Midwife arrived at which point I started to projectile vomit (into a bowl thankfully) I actually filled it! It was 2am at thins stage. She examined me and said I was a good 3cm. Off to the living room we went where I was trying my best to squat with each contraction. The midwife was so encouraging I don't think . I could have got through it without her. Oh was a superstar too. I was finding the contractions so tough to get through though we moved into the bathroom where I kneeled on a cushion in the bath with oh standing behind me hosing warm water on my lower back. I have to say, the relief that gave me was amazing! I was having gas&air at this stage too but the hot water was the business! All my pain was in my lower back and as my waters hadn't gone the midwife didn't want me to get in the pool.
4:30am and we decided she would examine me again and break my waters to try & relieve the pressure in my lower back. 7cm dilated BUT my waters were full of meconium
Midwife called for an ambulance to get me transferred to hospital. My god that was a painful journey! I was getting pressure and felt like I needed to push! Got to the hospital to a delivery room full of people waiting for me. They did a blood test from baby's head which showed no problems with his oxygenation so all good so far.
However, we got to the pushing bit (pretty quickly) and baby started to drop his heart rate. He was also turning
Forceps were mentioned and local anaesthetic discussed. Somehow my next push was a lot stronger than the previous haha! Not sure how I managed to stay calm but hearing them tell me they needed to get baby out made me push harder than I thought physically possible. I actually thought I was gona burst my eyeball at one point. In the end we got away with a ventouse (or kiwi cup) delivery to turn& steer my little baby who thought it would be a good idea to enter the world face up. He was shown to me briefly where I could see his breathing effort quite clearly (phew!) and oh told me he was a little boy
The paediatric doctors then suctioned and checked him over before he was placed on my chest. Perfect little boy with a full on barnet! I cannot put in to words how utterly relieved I was that my baby was here and he was safe!! Weighing 8lbs 8ozs he arrived at 6:29am. Considering I only started having contractions at midnight that wasn't bad work! I came away with an intact perineum (woo-hoo!) but did have some sutures to my labia and vagina. You know what? I couldn't have cared less! I was so so happy to have my healthy baby. Neither could I care less about not having the home birth I'd planned. It was such a surreal experience I feel Like I can't really explain it properly. It kind of took a while to sink in! I was really lucky I managed to breastfeed him straight away for over an hour. We got transferred up to the ward shortly after but I was allowed home at lunch time
