Hi. My wife and I are expecting our 1st child together although she has 2 boys already. We worked out she is around 6wks but on 23rd dec had some light bleeding, this has been on and off until 2days ago and nothing since. There hasnt been anything major just signs after wiping except for 3 occasions when there has been the smallest amount in the loo. We went to a&e on xmas day but got nowhere although we did get a scan date for 30th dec. She had the scan which showed the sac and fetal pole but no heart beat and they said she was around 5 wks at 2mm. She had a blood test for hcg levels which came back as 29,188 on 30th and another at 37,884 today. We are absolutly beside ourselves with worry. Are these figures normal. Any advice/knowledge would be great.

I think that if the levels double that's normal and is a healthy pregnancy but don't quote me on that i am sure some of the other girls will know the answers. Good luck to you both

I dont really know much but I didnt want to read your thread and then leave straight away; I would say that the increase in hcg is a positive sign and prefectly normal and not sure if at 5 weeks you would see a heartbeat on a scan anyway. I would also say that spotting in early pregnancy can be a normal symptom? Good luck :)

Hi, congratulations.

Some spotting is fine. and no heartbeat at 5 weeks is exactly right. I had a scan at 5 weeks where they saw no heart beat, that is to be expected. i then had another at 7 weeks and the heart beat was clearly visible.

Those levels sound really good and high and as long as they are raising thats good.

No need to worry, be happy :)

Welcome and congratulations

Hi, I'd say the same as Hope, all sounds pretty normal. Hope things go well - keep us informed.

Welcome to the forum. :)

You wouldnt expect to see a heartbeat before about 7 weeks. Spotting and cramping are perfectly normal at this point too and the HCG numbers you've given are excellent. Everything sounds perfectly normal to me :) Congratulations.

We were concerned mainly because the nurse on epau said she would expect the figures to double which they havent done, but they are not there today to explain. She has had no cramping and still 'feels pregnant' but the more we read the more confused we get, she had nothing like this before which is worrying her more.
Thank you so much for your replies and giving me some hope.
Oh btw, we have another scan booked in on friday so im keeping everything crossed.

My sister's never doubled and she bled up to 12 wks with my nephew.

Everything you have written sounds normal so far :)

You wouldn't expect to be able to see a heartbeat until 6 weeks at the very earliest, but normally 7 weeks.

Here is a chart for you on HCG levels, you other half's sound good and normal and they don't need to double! :)

At 6 weeks it is surprisingly common for women to have some spotting. Some people believe it's because this is when the woman's period might normally be due.

Good luck for the scan on Friday

The hCG levels are fantastic, and they usually double every 48-72 hours, with the rate slowing down after the first few weeks so the amount they've increased by looks good. Hope your scan goes well on Friday - keep us updated?

I had an empty sac @ 5 weeks 3 days, back a week later and there was bubs @ 3.4mm with a little heart flickering away :) Could be just a bit early, not sure on the HCG levels though seems the girls have helped you out there, keep us posted and good luck

Think the girls have covered everything, try not to worry too much  and keep us updated

good luck with the next scan, I don't really have anything to add as the ladies on here seem to have already been very helpful as usual! Hopefully you're feeling more positive, let us know how you get on! Good luck!

Hi Swiss,

Your situation sounds so similiar to the one i'm in right now. I was under the impression that i was 6 weeks pregnant on tues 29/12. I had to have an emergency scan on 30/12 due to bleeding (very similiar to how you have described). At the scan my husband and i were told that the sac and foetal pole were there but only 2mm and the sonographer said that was more in keeping with 4 weeks as opposed to 6 weeks. They did not test my blood so don't know what my HCG levels are. I'm hoping that i am further behind than what we initially thought.

From what i've read in various books and online etc etc. there seems to be rea;l variation in sizes etc. One book i looked at said at 6 weeks your baby could be between 2 and 4mm. Another said it would be 4mm at 4 weeks. Surely not every baby develops at EXACTLY the same rate?? That is what i keep telling myself anyhow. I'm being rescanned on 8/1 to see if the baby is developing ok or not.

Sorry for going on and round the houses but just wanted to say i really understand what you are both going through. I can't think of anything else at the minute. I hope everything works out for you. Let me know how it goes. :)
