Pains after feeding - Vasospasm?

I think I am suffering from this. I often get a painful burning/throbbing sensation in my nipples a few minutes after feeding. It is worse in the evening and overnight and I get the same feeling if I get cold (and have done since starting breastfeeding but thought it was just sensitive nipples).

As my breastfeeding experience has involved a lot of pain from day one, I hadnt thought much about it, but now her latch is a lot better and feeding itself usually doesnt hurt but I am still getting the pains afterwards. Plus I've also noticed my nipples go white after feeding and I am wondering if I am actually having these vasospasms.

Am seeing my GP in a week (for my 6 week check up) so am unsure whether to mention it to him. I gather there isn't anything that can be done so not sure if there's any point. Does anyone else have these? How do you treat them?

Well I mentioned it to the GP and he said it's just my milk refilling and if it gets too painful to consider switching to formula. Rather unimpressed by his dismissive attitude to it. I do not believe it is my milk refilling, nor do I believe these are normal pains. I guess I just have to live with them though, as I'm not switching to formula after battling for so long to get the hang of breastfeeding!

I can't help you maud but I can't believe how un helpful your doctor is I'd ask for a second opinion xxx

I get exactly the same sort of pain and the white nipples. When my lo is finishing her feed I feel a burning going through my breast as if she's sucking my insides out.
I thought it was normal xx

It's horrid isn't it! It frequently wakes me up just as I'm drifting off to sleep. I'm hoping that her latch will continue to improve and the pains should reduce as I gather it's compression damage that causes it (unless you have reynaulds disease).

I already do. My nipples got properly torn up in the early days so I apply after every feed to help them heal. Great stuff.
