I just wondered when you haven't had an epidural or other pain relief during labour what they do if there is tearing. Do they use local anesthetic to stitch you up? And how do they administer it, with a suppository, or injection?

They give you a choice whether you want anaesethic or not. You will have au much adrenalin pumping round you may not need it. I had it the first time and can't remember the second. It's a local anaesethic they inject in to you. Bit like when you have a filling at the dentist. Nothing to worry about. I had an episiotomy with no pain relief, not even gas and air, didn't even notice!

They give you local.
Didn't even ask with me just said need to cut and stabbed loads of local in and cut.

Then again my BP had dropped so I was trying not to pass out so they wanted baby out quick.

I didn't have any pain relief during birth but had some nasty second degree tears and they gave me a local anaesethic via injection to sew me up. They said I could suck on the gas and air if I wanted but it hadn't worked during birth so I didn't bother when being sewn up! Like others said you are high as a kite on adrenaline anyway so I can't remember it hurting (NOTHING could hurt like dilating to 10cm with no pain relief anyway!!! ha ha!). The worst bit was when she stuck her finger up my bum to check she hadn't sewn my foof to my rectum - now THAT was where my final scrap of dignity left the building!! lol

I only had a few stitches and just had gas and air while they were being done. As others have said, it was about the easiest bit!

Thanks girls, I'm pretty determined to do the whole labour thing without any drugs because I believe it's better for the baby and even more than that I'm terrified of allergic reactions to to drugs, I've had bad reactions in the past to various medications and labour doesn't really seem like the time to experiment. I wasn't so sure about what I'd do if I needed stitches, but sounds like I might be fine without anything.

I had LO on gas and air and had 5 runs of stitches (no idea how many in total but took 45 minutes to stitch) im terrified of needles but your adrenaline is so high and you have done all that i can say i didnt notice, they gave me an injection so i wouldnt feel it. I must say i went to the toilet and everything and never felt painful until it had wore off and then it was no more painful than i expected it to feel after that.

My advice would be but a plastic jug and put it next to the toilet, fill with warm water and pour over as you wee to dilute and take some sting out.
I used Tee Tree oil in the bath because its anti septic and seemed to help heal. xx

Put it this way I fell asleep being stitched up, mind you it did take an age!
Xxx

Oh and they let me keep the gas and air while i where getting stitched i wouldnt let them take it tbh i loved the stuff.

I just had g&a for mine. I had no pain relief at all for the last three hours having Sophia (after being on g&a for a bit during the day) and when it came to the stitches I was like, noooo I hate needles!!! The midwife couldn't believe it, lol!!

Had an episiotomt without local anaesthetic and the doctor wondered why i screamed and moved.but gas and air to be stitched x
