Things never went this quickly with carey i only went to the Drs on tuesday. I got a call from my midwife just a breif hello my names...etc.. and she said i will receive a date for my nuchal scan around 12 weeks???

i never got offered this scan with carey so do you think its because she thinks somethings wrong?

ooh now im thinking i was offered it i think i just didnt take it because it was saying whether there could be risks not actually diognosing it? am i on about the right scan?

Sorry for going on!!

Amy

Hi

i think more and more healt authorities are offering these as standard now. it could be that its new since you had your last babe.

its alwasys a good sign if they react quickly i think. i was the same as you - went to docs and within a week i had appt for scan at 12 weeks plus loads of info on antenatal etc. however a friend who lives 20 mins away and so is in another hospital was told by her doc not to come back to the docs till 12 weeks? she then got told off cos she hadnt had a scan

so hopefully its all a good sign that they are on the ball and has not becase they have any concerns.

As far as I know, the nuchal test is offered to over 35's. It is an expensive test and has not really been available to all in the UK.
Here in SA, you're offered one if over 35 and it's VERY expensive.

A nuchal test is done between 11 and 14 weeks to measure the fluid behind baby's neck. This is to detect the risk of Downs. No other defects are looked for at this scan.
If the fluid measures above 3mm, you are at higher risk, but it is also jointed calculated with the results of a blood test.

Amy, it might be a good thing to go for this test. A recent report suggested that more Downs babies are born to moms under 35, simply because they're never really regarded to be at risk and never tested. (I don't mean the AFP test - it's not an accurate test anyway. Only 60 percent accurate with a high false positive)

So, take the test - at their expense, it's worth knowing!
Good luck and let us know how you get on!

ahh god so why they offering it me they must think that something isnt right to want to do it if its so expensive!

does it matter whether theres high risk cases in the family? my mum was high risk for my brother and sister but there both ok would that be the reason do you think?

Thanks for the reply X

Amy dont worry!!

Some health Authorities do offer them as standard now no matter what your age or risk level, mine does and so does the neighbouring one. i dont think they generally pick out individuals other than sometimes over 35s as emila said. its getting more common for them to offer it now as i think more women are kicking up a fuss.

i really do think you are being offered this as a routine test as i was.

i had mine as part of my twelve week scan, it took the sonographer about 3 mins longer than the rest of scan and she told me then are there that the result was very low risk.

i think its only expensive if they dont offer you a twelve week scan at all. if they are doing the scan anyway then its not really any more expense for them.

please dont panic and cause yourself worry hun, i'm sure its just routine. for your area.
