How long does this agonising pain going to last when breast feeding? I am in bed crying wishing my midwife had told me it was going to be this hard! 3 weeks in and I am exhausted with 2 split nipples. The pain only lasts about a minute but it is agony! Getting very stressed now as she wants feeding again! Help!!!!

Ps I am trying to wean off nip shields, any tips??? Formula is sounding good at this moment!

Have you tried lansinoh? I found it was great and acted as a bit of a barrier too. If you are especial sore I would try only feeding off one side for a day to heal a bit on one side. Also after feeding hand express a bit of breast milk and rub it into your nipple, this so helped mine heal xx

Have you had your latch checked?? It shouldn't hurt that much. Also a TT check.

Also is there a reason your trying to wean off the shields?? My LO took till 4months not to need them, and we just suddenly didn't need them. Xxx

On my iPhone - so cant see tickers :(

Mine stopped hurting recently. Around 6 week mark. Hopefully it'll stay that way!

I'd second lansinoh. You put it on as much as you want. No need to wash off before feeding.

Have you tried different feeding positions? Is your baby attaching to the breast with a good, open wide mouth? This is so important, so nipple reaches far back in the mouth, and less friction, therefore less pain and rubbing all round.

Sme mums find it useful once their baby is attached, to gently pull their baby closer to the breast. It sometimes helps baby draw the areola deeper in their mouth.

Have a look on the Internet for moist wound healing + breast feeding for info on how best to help cracked nipples heal.

Your doing an amazing job! It will get better.

Hi hun, it hurts a lot but I've found lonolin nipple balm is great, within the first 2 days I had a split nipple but started using the balm and all healed with in a few days.

Definetly get your latch checked, my mw helped with mine in the beginning.

You will get there hun, your doing well. X

I'm still in pain with the initial latch but I do have a damaged nipple that hasn't yet healed. My lo is 5 weeks and my undamaged nipple still burns when I put him on, for about 10 seconds.
Stick with it, it does get easier.
Deffo rub milk in and lansinoh is essential IMO x

I've been using shields since 4 weeks and lo is now 10 weeks and I have no plans to stop using them! There's no way I could of carried on without them plus I'm sure it's because of them that lo will take my milk from a bottle no problem too!

Some mw don't like shields but I don't see the problem! If it means you can carry on rather than start on formula then I think carry on using them :) x

Thanks so much for all your info and help! I have got that lansinoh balm and it does help, but I find the shields don't stay on very well with it! The cracks hav healed thank goodness but it is still very sore but I haven't caved in yet!! I also find usi g the shields difficult when out and about as lo doesn't always stay on for the full feed and knocks it off then tryi g to put it back on without exposing myself is impossible!!!

You are all lovely and thanks for your help. Xxx

the fact that the discomfort goes is a good sign, hopefully it will get better once you are fully healed, breast milk is also good to aid healing, hand express a bit out and rub it in, allow it to dry in the fresh air,
Have you had your latch checked since stopping with the shields? :flower:
