Right Ladies,

This might be a very obvious thing to ask, but i am going to ask it anyway as you are all a fountain of different knowledge so here goes....

We have got the next to you crib and wondered how many and what kind of mattress covers we should get for it? I know there are going to be some accidents, so want to be prepared in the best way i can.

Also, do most people put their babys to sleep in those sleeping bags? We only have one and now i am thinking eeeeek we are not prepared for bed time at all!!!

Any help, tips and guidance is always welcome. No doubt i will learn all of this on Saturday at our antentatl class  x

We used a Next2me crib til my daughter was 5 and a half months old. We never had any accidents but I did put a towel over the mattress just in case. I had two covers in case one had to be washed.
As for sleeping, I would put her in a swaddle sleep suit or swaddle her in a large burp cloth since they are very light (she was born in the summer).
She is now 21 months and we still use sleeping bags. I got the Puckababy 4 seasons when she was about 6 months and have been using them ever since! A bit pricey but 100% worth their price since you can use them year round!x

We had the Next2Me for our little boy and bought 2 waterproof mattress covers and I think 4 fitted sheets, just to not have to worry about washing! Little one was not a sicky child but did have reflux so would spit up acid sometimes which would bleach the sheets! One thing I would say about the Next2Me is that the mattress is REALLY hard! So it's not advisable at all but by about night 4 of no sleep for me whatsoever I put a pillow in the cot so I could actually put him down in it and he then slept soundly in it until 6 months! This time I'm going to buy a new pillow ready xx

We have the next2me too and Winter hated it for the first few nights, but loves it now. She’s never had an issue with the mattress (as far as I can tell haha). She has never had any accidents thankfully. She does spit up sometimes so I just keep a towel over the mattress/under the sheet. As for covers, we have two proper mattress sheets but I often just use a baby blanket..

Winter sleeps in her onesie and a love to dream swaddle suit (the most amazing baby product ever). SIDS safety recommends babies sleep in wearable blankets so they don’t suffocate. It’s also easier, then you don’t have to get up because they’ve kicked it off. I have 3 swaddle suits for her at the moment. She chews on them so they need washing nearly everyday. I’d recommend you buy a few sleeping bags/swaddle suits from different brands and see what works best for your baby.

Fab, thank you ladies.

So last night we bought a waterproof mattress protector and two sheets. I thought start off with 2 and if we need more, i can get some later on, but that will do for now.

So it looks like i need to get him a swaddle suit then? It will be heading towards the summer months when he arrives, but this is England, so really who knows what the temps will be like in our house.

We thought last night him sleeping in a baby grow and tucked under a secured blanket would be ok?x

I much preferred the sleep bags to blankets, made me feel more at ease that she couldn't pull blanket over her face, will be doing the same for this baby too. x

Yea thats my worry also. Will get a sleep bag for him x

Little one had a really strong startle reflex so the swaddle suits were the only thing that allowed him to stay asleep, it was a godsend when we found them - we called them his peanut suit as they zipped him in to look like a little peanut! Xx

Ahhh so these look a bit more snug than the sleeping bag type ones.

Its so hard to know whats best as he might not be fussy with any of them, in which case, which option do i go for as i dont want to spoil him with all these different options  Hopefully he is like his mum and will happily sleep anywhere and any how x

I think probably go for the sleeping bag type because they always come in handy and then see how you get on! You'll soon get an idea of what is and isn't working and you can get most baby stuff on next day delivery, as most new mums are frantically ordering all sorts of sleeping apparatus etc at 3 in the morning by the end of the first few nights ;-) xx

We have a Next to Me crib too. We have 2 waterproof mattress protectors and 4 fitted sheet. I think that's just the right amount. That means if the whole crib needs changed then we've got a full set to put on without worrying about things being in the wash. We intended using the sleeping bags but I had blankets to start with as the sleep bags have a minimum weight so I didn't want to get caught out in case he was too little. We've kinda just stuck with blankets though as he's now pretty settled in the crib and I don't dare rock the boat!! If I was using sleeping bags, I think I'd have 3, again just due to the laundry issue. Lots of new mums swear by swaddle wraps however my little man will not tolerate his arms tucked in under any circumstances!! You'll find what works for you.

So today we bought a new born sleeping bag, so we now have two - I just can't remember what age the other one is that we have and I am no way hunting for it, amongst all the packed up boxes and baby stuff. Once settled in our house, I will make sure I order another sleeping bag and possibly some more sheets as well.

Thank you ladies, I now feel a lot more confident in bed time for the little man <3

Don't stock up on loads of new born swaddles, they grow so quickly they probably won't fit anymore after a month or so. You can learn to swaddle with a sheet or cloth for during the day. I would be careful with blankets purely for suffocating reasons but I know moms who use them. I just couldn't sleep knowing something could happen. Well "sleep" is a big word for the naps you get after birth!

The swaddle suits I use tuck their arms up by their face, so your son might like them too. Winter soothes herself to sleep now by rubbing her swaddled hands all over her face, so if she wasn’t in the swaddle she’d be scratching herself pretty badly. She would always wriggle out of swaddle blankets and the one time I tried her in a swaddle suit that locked her arms down she cracked it.

We got two sleep bags from mothercare (on offer) and they are from newborn to 6 months old. They’re only a 2.5 tog as it’ll be the middle of summer.0
