Hi Ladies,

I will be reusing my daughters moses basket for new baby in September but just wondered what everyones thoughts were on getting a new mattress for it?

It has only ever been used by my daughter for 12 weeks but she was a bit sicky on it now and again etc (it is only foam so I can put it in washing machine) so not sure if I should be reusing it or buying a new one? x

Think it depends how it was stored. If it was in the attic I'd be a bit worried about dustmites etc? a good boil wash in the washing machine should get rid of any nasties though (if it will withstand it) - Im just a bit of a worrier!
Xxx

I bought new for a second hand Moses basket we borrowed as the original mattress was dented where baby had been lying. I'll probably do the same this time too, though we have a snuz pod which DD ended up in after about 3 weeks as she was a chunk!

I thought I remembered a safety link too and found this on the Lullaby Trust website "It can be common to use a second-hand mattress either from friends and family, or from your previous children. There is some research that found an increased chance of SIDS when using a second-hand mattress although the link is not yet proven. To help reduce this risk, if you are using a second-hand mattress make sure the mattress you choose was previously completely protected by a waterproof cover, and then use one for your baby as well. The mattress should also still be firm and flat to keep your baby sleeping safely."

Xx

I'm reusing the same moses basket as my daughter used but bought a new mattress from mothercare for £9.99. Glad I did as when it came down from my mums attic there were tiny bits of mould on it xx

I bought a whole new rig because previous Moses was stored in my mom's attic without any covering so I didn't want to use it in case of hidden bugs. If it had been stored properly, I would have just bought a new mattress cus they're only cheapo :)

Mine's a funny shaped Moses basket/crib that is very old so it had a new mattress for Harry which had to b made for it, I'm hoping when we get it down out the loft it will b fibe to reuse but if I have got any doubts at all I've told hubby we will get a new one.

Thanks for the replies ladies :)

It was stored in the attic for around 6 months but covered with bin bags so I am just going to wash all the covers for it etc but I think I will go and get a new mattress after reading your replies. I have to go and get a new cotbed mattress this weekend anyway so may aswell get one for moses basket at same time! :D x

Ours is brand new as in mattress and basket but it's foam with some sort of plastic sheet that can't be removed so it's a wipe clean style came with a fitted sheet too though, we were told you can boil foam mattresses and you can also use non bio tabs but just get some mattress covers too xx
