Wonder if anyone can hep me? Am 31 weeks and saw midwife yesterday who measured bump. She was quite surprised as it measured 34cm (after being 29cm at 29 weeks). She said she will keep an eye on it but not sure what this means. Have had a look at info on growth scans etc but can only find info relating to small measurements.
Does this just mean i'm having a big baby? Any thoughts much appreciated!

probably. i measured big all the way thorugh and had a ten pounder. it may well level off at about 35 weeks for you though but if it doesn't chances are you're having a rhino :)

I measured big all the way through too and Ryan was born at 38 weeks weighing 9lb.

Might just be a growth spurt :)

I had my 28 week check-up a few days ago and the MW told me I was measuring big too. She told me not to worry, she said the baby may have had a growth spurt and she will monitor the growth again at 32 weeks.

I'm messuring big. I'm not the top line of the growth chart they plot. Everytime the doctor or midwife feels my belly they say 'oh its a big baby' but i'm not worried as long as he/she comes out ok.

It could be extra water or the position the babies lying in but if you are just having a big baby I wouldn't worry too much. Its unlikely they will even do a scan. Nathan was measuring about 6 weeks ahead and he was quite large born but not massive at 9lb 5oz.

Im measuring big too but thats due to me being a type 2 diabetic i went to the midwifes at 30 weeks and was measuring 37 cm .

I am due for my next scan on Monday because with me been diabetic i have to have regular scans ill be nearly 33 weeks so im dreading to see what i measure lol :rotfl:

As long as she comes out fine thats all that matters.

I have been told by my MW and the antenatal if the baby is big i will be induced between 35 and 38 weeks but if its too big the only way out will be c section .

I dont think its the same for a non diabetic person i think they only induce ladies who at high risk early .

Best thing to do is to check with your MW and she will beable to tell you more.

i was measuring big throughout my pregnancy, i did have a lot of fluids but i did have a big(ish) baby too... she was 8lb15 @ 38+2

We were told at antenatal classes that basically the midwifes use the measuring tape as a rough guess and unless they can back up their "big" or "small" claims with a real substantial 'why they said that' comment it's usually a load of old socks and means nothing at all. They said that basically during antenatal appointments they don't have much they can do with you, they check urine and BP etc but that's it really, they might have a feel or get out their tape measure but it's for no other reason that giving themselves something to do. So...at my 32 week check she measure me and told me I was measuring ahead so I asked why and how they knew that by measuring etc, she just said "oh only about 32.5 and it's just a rough guide" so really don't take any notice of measurements made with the tape measure....it's usually complete rubbish. Seemingly even scan's are not that accurate for measurements either but I'll not get into that one!!

well i have had 4 babies and with two i measured big and had 9 and 10 pounders. With the others i measued spot on and had 7 and 8 pounders.

so i think there is some logic in the old tape measure. :)

My sil has not long had a baby and babys weight was spot on with her measurements .

So were a couple of my friends .

I've measured big the whole way through but i know i am having a big baby due to late scans i have had.

As for the bump measurement it isn't very acurate.

Firstly it could vary depending on the skilss of the midwife measuring. Secondly it doesn't account for what is water, what is baby etc. And thirdly it is only a rough estimate that the cms of belly measurement correlate to the number of weeks you are.

So i wouldn't worry :)

i measured big all the wat through my prenancy up to 12 weeks in front and hannah was 10lb 4oz born at 35+5

I used to think the scans were rubbish at estimating the babys size but I had a scan at 37+ weeks which gave them a weight of 9lb exactly.

2 days later he was born weighing exactly that. I was well impressed lol

Mearusing has been quite accurate for me. Jess was spot on all the way through and she was 6lb 11oz at 39 weeks. Aimee was about 3 weeks ahead and she was 8lb 11oz and nathan was about 6 weeks ahead and he was 9lb 5oz.

Hi

I am measuring big as well and ill get to see tom if its right!!
I think for the most part its pretty accurate

With stephen iu measured big all the way through, but he popped out only 7lb 8oz, i was expecting a 9 pounder.Am measuring big at the mo but will see.

I measured big all the way through too and had a whopper!

Can symoathise with being big again, at 31 weeks i was measuring for 35 weeks and have to go for a glucose test to check for diabetes.

If i have a 10lb baby im having a designer vagina operation cos stephen did enough damage at 7lb plus! :rotfl:
